HUCKNALL NOT EXPECTING COLDPLAY LATER

Mick Hucknall - remember him? - has been muttering about how record companies are so useless these days he doubts if they'll even be able to sustain a Coldplay-sized band for long:

"U2 will be there [in 20 years], but not many others. The problem is the major labels are too busy pleasing shareholders, which means rapid returns. He added to Britain's Now magazine: "There's little investment in long-term careers and there are no major icons out there. Coldplay music is for insomniacs."

What he says is true to a degree - record labels aren't investing in the future to any real degree, but then anyone in one of the Big Four with half a clue would be thinking that it's better to squeeze every penny now as the majors as we know them won't be around in a decade or so. But for Simply Red to suggest that Coldplay are a little dull is surely pushing the satirical envelope a little too far?
