Paolo Nutini: A Leon Rosselson for our times

Paolo Nutini is not a happy man. Personally, if we'd managed to get so many glowing column inches despite a fairly slight talent, we'd figure the press has given us more than an even break, but Nutini feels somewhat hard done by, and has decided the best way to express his anger at a certain tabloid is to write a song about it.

You'd have thought he'd have learned by now that isn't his metier - he'd have been better off making an angry clay pot, or doodling on a pad by the telephone. But, no, song it was - titled The Sun Can Kiss My Ass:

They say things that are meant to bring you down
they put you up on your high horse and rock you til you're down
They say I hate the Pope and that I love dope
These things are meant to bring me down but The Sun can kiss my ass

We seem to have missed the coverage of Nutini's alleged marijuana-fuelled anti-Papist behaviour, but it's duly noted; we're more worried by Nutini's poor grasp of the English language, confusing "a pedestal" with a "high horse". Is it even possible for someone to put another person on a high-horse?

And, if he isn't even bovvered, why write a ditty about it?

"Slight talent"?! He writes and sings his own songs, which is probably all he wants to do in life and media attention though, granted will sell more albums, is not what is important to him. So i dont understand the criticsm of his self defence!

I'd be wary of criticising his English, not least since he's entitled to adapt a familiar phrase if he chooses.
Then there's the fact that he sings "The Sun can kiss my arse."(UK/Scottish English term.)
If you're going to quote the boy, better to use his own words, I'd suggest.

Sorry - Contactmusic transcribed the line with two asterisks instead of three.

And, yes, he can adapt terms if he chooses. That's creative. Doesn't seem to be much point in doing it if the end result doesn't make any sense.

Besides: the pope/dope rhyme? Seriously?

I must say Mr h b, you truly are a tremendous cunt. To label someone who is hailed as a modern day musical prodigy by critics all over the world and is on the same record label as some of our own greats as only having slight talent is very short sighted, I mean he wouldnt have had said glowing column inches without reason now would he? Haha and your own talents include what then my good sir? Sitting on your computer writing about things as trivial and as pointless as your own existence seems to be? Do everyone a favour and go fuck yourself.

You know, anonymous, you're right. I shouldn't have said "slight talent". It was a gross overestimation. To be fair, though, it has been three years since I first wrote this; with the benefit of hindsight, I'd have gone with "despite being some sort of Hoffmesiter Bear tribute act with no discernible saving graces". Still, we live and learn, eh?
