Folkobit: Liam Clancy

Irish folk icon Liam Clancy has died.

Although Irish-born, it was America who made the fortunes of the Clancy Brothers And Tommy Makem. Having already enjoyed success as an actor and producer in his late teens, it was a second burst of fame for Clancy, but what a burst. The singers embraced the The Ed Sullivan Show, performing for JFK and a close friendship with Bob Dylan (Dylan considered Clancy to be the best "ballad singer" in the world).

The Clancy Brothers stumbled onto a trademark by chance - their mother sent them an arran sweater each shortly after they arrived in the US. It gave them a visual image which would be maintained through their career (and, in a large part, lead to the popular image of folk singers being besweatered.)

In 1962, Ciarán MacMathuna reintroduced the band to their home country, and from there it was a short time before they'd become what Gay Byrne would call "the most famous Irish men in the world". The non-Clancy members of the band would slowly drift away, and by the mid-1979s the band dissolved.

Liam struggled to find his feet after the band split, dipping into bankruptcy before being rescued by American TV. A couple of series of a talk-and-music show followed, bringing him back into partnership with Tommy Makem. The pair eventually formed a duo which would endure for thirteen years.

Following the death of his brother Tom, Liam returned to a revived Clancy Brothers in 1990. This version of the band toured for six years before calling time with an elaborate Farewell To Ireland special, after which Liam once again became a solo performer.

Clancy, who was 74, was the last surviving member of the band.

Bookmarks - Internet stuff: Hardformat

Today, we've been enjoying looking at Hardformat, a celebration of physical music format design. It's a collection of record sleeves, but that sells it short.

Marilyn Manson hasn't been dumped, he's been handed an exciting opportunity on a pink slip

You know what? Let's not look at it like Marilyn Manson's audience have now reached puberty in such numbers that his latest album managed to barely squeak over 100,000 sales in the US. Let's not see it as if Interscope have decided that a Manson is a one-trick pony whose trick looks a little dated against a backdrop of Twilight and True Blood making cheap Goth look much sexier. Let's not see this as an end, shall we?

Let's turn that badly-drawn-with-eyeliner frown upside-down, shall we?

The singer told Metal Hammer: "We've just been released from our record contract with Interscope so I think a lot of the creative control on which my hands were tied on a lot of choices - the music videos - things like that (has been regained).

"I was so restrained from the music that I wanted to make - what they would allow, they would put out, what ideas they would allow to be conveyed in these videos. At least half of my creative output has been squashed, so now I think people can expect a whole lot more."

Mmm. Yes, it was a lack of creative freedom that was holding you back, wasn't it? Rather than a more pressing lack of creative ideas. So what's the big plan now you're "free", Marilyn? Same thing, but with more nipples?

Public Enemy: They do look the type, though

The Washington Post accuses Public Enemy of laughing at terrorism, and then has to say sorry:

A Nov. 26 article in the District edition of Local Living incorrectly said a Public Enemy song declared 9/11 a joke. The song refers to 911, the emergency phone number.

Gordon in the morning: Mission impossible

The Bizarre index claims that Judi Dench is Fergie's "new best pal", although it turns out they've just been in a film together and there's some vague talk of Judi doing a cameo in a Peas video. Apparently everyone thinks this is a good idea.

So, there's lots of photos of them together, is there?

Actually, no: Fergie didn't turn up for the premiere party. But the good Dame did dance to a Black Eyed Peas song, which is enough to support the "close friendship" making lead story for Gordon.

The X Factor reaches 'mine, all mine' stage

We might not have to deploy R Kelly, it turns out. The X Factor - through the link-up with Philip Green - seems to be busily sowing the seeds of its final, helicopters on the roof stage.

Taking the thing to Vegas kind-of makes sense - a gaudy tribute to losers who think they're winning, only to discover they're going home hungry. But given the majority of visitors to Vegas are American, why would you build it under the British brand of X Factor rather than, say, American Idol?

And where will the constant stream of contestants wanting to be humiliated come from (humiliated, I'm guessing, by robot versions of Cowell and the others, like those automaton versions of Norm and Cliff in the old Cheers airport bars)? Surely part of the X Factor attraction is that some of the contestants are chosen because they can sing tolerably well - if Factor in Vegas is going to keep going round the calendar, won't it be relying on 'people who have lost all their money' as its contestant pool?

If finding enough people to be on stage is going to be a trial, you've got to wonder where they think the audience is going to come from:

"The home of the X Factor – live from Las Vegas!" enthuses Green. "We'll have a store. And it'll all be online. You have 20, 30, 40 million people tuning in twice a week. You bring two or three hundred million viewers to a venue – off we go! It's taking it up a peg. The rest of the world is Part Two."

300 million people streaming X Factor online twice a week. It's a bit more than taking it up a peg, isn't it? This is lifting it up like a field full of rotary driers.

You've got to admire Green's personal auction there - "we'll have a shop - no, and a webcam, watched by ten, no, twenty, no, a billion people. And NOBODY WILL EVER DIE." The most realistic outcome he should really expect, though, is a few hundred thousand for the first couple of cycles before interest gradually flows away.

And there's a comforting thought: the X Factor slowly melting in the Nevada desert, surrounded by people who have just emptied their 401ks on the craps table.

R Kelly: This might just be ruining Christmas in a different way

I'm happy to support any campaign which sets out to try and throw itself under the wheels of the X Factor juggernaut, but can't help feeling that if you're going to campaign for an alternative number one, R Kelly might not be the stalking horse to go for.

Gordon in the morning: Steady, there

Gordon's a little excited this morning:

ASTON MERRYGOLD did somersaults and gave the girls a glimpse of his oiled six-pack performing at radio station Key 103's Jingle Ball in Manchester on Wednesday.

Deep breaths, Gordon, deep breaths.

In other Gordon news, Mick Hucknall is embarking on a long legal battle to stop his neighbour going onto his land. He could save his money by just putting loudspeakers round the boundary which play bits of his back catalogue?

Andrew Harrison is doing a jig

Andrew Harrison, over at the Radio Centre, is delighted that David Liddiment is leading the BBC Trust's poke about into Radio 2.

(Just by the by, should Liddiment even be on the BBC Trust? He's a director of mega-indie All3Media; it seems a little odd that an 'independent' guardian of the Corporation, supposedly there to represent the licence-payers, has rather a major interest in a large supplier - and a delicious 2% stake in that company as well. It is declared as an interest on the BBC site, but still seems fundamentally wrong.)

Anyway, something must be done - for some reason - about the age of Radio 2's audience. Harrison goes into his usual fundamental misunderstanding of music:

Radio 2 should be able to utilise the advantages its £40m programming budget and access to national airwaves to provide a service that sounds, during all listening hours (not just in the evenings) unlike anything that the commercial sector would ever be able to provide.

It does, Andrew. It puts out a sequence of decent sounding collection of programmes made by people who care about what they're doing and knows what they're talking about.

Seriously, though, Andrew: you think the BBC should only be allowed to do something that "the commercial sector would [n]ever be able to provide"? Isn't that a little absurd, given that the commercial sector could, feasibly, produce anything it chose. Absolute could choose to create a programme which consisted entirely of the sounds of schoolchildren being dunked in vats of ice water, by cross-subsidising it with profits from advertising on the breakfast show. Your model seems to be a pretty hefty bar to the BBC doing anything.
But that is not the Radio 2 of today. Almost 40% of its music comes from the past nine years, with a greater emphasis on new music than pre-1980 output and limited focus on its older listeners.

What's with the desire to force older listeners off to Radio 2? If commercial radio had any heart, social conscience or business savvy, shouldn't they be focusing on a growing demographic sector who value radio, have money to spend and are being actively targeted by advertisers?

There's something a little unpleasant about Harrison's approach - 'we're not interested in the oldies, let them go to Radio 2, but leave the bright young things for us', but even if we accept that he has his reasons, you have to wonder at his confused belief that being a bit older means you only want to hear music from before 1980.

Given that "music from the last nine years" can mean Susan Boyle, Kathryn Tickell, Harry Connick, and so on, suggesting that a station should drive its playlist by sell-by dates shows a lack of understanding about how people listen.

More to the point, I'm now comfortably into Radio 2's target audience, and I don't want to hear a station which plays nothing but The Eagles and Patti Boulaye. My record-buying pattern hasn't yet shifted to only getting compilations from Time-Life Records, and I feel a little offended that Harrison thinks that a music station courting me should be playing only ancient records. His attitudes and understanding of the radio audience are as outdated as the playlists he wants Radio 2 to adopt.

Gennaro Castaldo Watch: Simon Cowell has ruined Christmas for bookies

Oh, boo hoo - Simon Cowell has ruined Christmas for Fred from BetFred, William Hill and their friends. They're talking about stopping running a book on the Christmas number one because The X factor has taken the guesswork out of it. HMV's gambling-entertainment vizier is on hand to mark the occasion:

And Gennaro Castaldo, of retailer HMV, said: "It's almost impossible to be among the best sellers at Christmas these days without either being a product of the X Factor or going on the show to promote your album.

"It gives you access to a huge family audience and we see an instant impact on sales as soon as an artist goes on. The only challenge to total Simon Cowell domination is coming from the equally potent Twilight New Moon franchise, which is driving book, calendar and T-shirt sales."

You've got to love the odds on a Twilight calendar getting to number one in the singles chart, thought.

Interesting that the worry is that Cowell has ruined the gambling at Christmas, and not that he's TOTALLY RUINED CHRISTMAS MUSIC FOREVER. Which you might have thought was more pressing.

MySpace Music lands in the UK in time to closedown

After all this waiting, and despite the clear indications from HQ that they can't afford the free streaming at the heart of the service much longer, MySpace Music has launched its UK variant.

The slogan sounds oddly familiar:

MySpace Music has launched in Britain with a "Get Real Close" campaign

Get Real Close? Is that closer than you'd get with HMV's Get Closer campaign, or is it not quite as close?

The idea of launching the UK site now is, erm, perfectly clear:
"This is indicative of the direction we want to go," said Courtney Holt, president of MySpace Music.

"We want to be a social content and media platform and we believe heavily in the socialization of content as core to our future strategy," he told Reuters in London.

"It's not about just a passive listening experience. We want you to be active, we want you to go places, we want you to search for music. Music lives in places that require you to work to find it. We know our audience is hungry for discovery."

Righto, so you're suggesting you're the perfect platform to aggregate music that you have to search for elsewhere? That makes sense.

Clearly, the hope is that other companies will do some of the expensive work of streaming, but that does raise the question of what, exactly, MSMUk sees their role as.
"We're a large and live media platform for the social sharing and consumption of music, and we're also bolting on great business opportunities -- ticketing, touring events, merchandise, downloads," Holt said.

But you've just said that you expect your audience to be off, working hard to discover music elsewhere. If I was a music business, wouldn't I want to be going into partnership with the sites where people will be listening to music for minutes at a stretch? Isn't it better to have advertising at the finish post rather than at the start?

Simon Cowell - it's not just about the money

This is the real gem in the otherwise depressing discussion of just how much cash is swooshing about The X Factor:

[The Guardian's Maggie] Brown said that Peter Fincham, ITV's director of television, channels and content, was on the phone to Cowell "at least four times as week". She added that Cowell's control on the show, which his Syco TV co-produces with Talkback Thames, extended to the number of times the camera cuts to his face during a programme.

I don't think it would be so bad that ITV are making £100million in advertising revenue from the programme if, like in the old days, they spent that on doing something worthwhile to balance it out. Now, though, X Factor seems to be the high water mark for cultural contributions from the network.

Madonna: Or, to put it another way...

The bust image of a middle-aged blond woman with deep-blue eyes. Her hair is parted from the middle and falls in waves upto her neck. She is wearing a brown and black printed dress with the front open. A black chain is wound around her neck. She is looking slightly towards the right of the image and smiling.

That's the alt text from the main image on the Madonna Wikipedia. It's very detailed, but... has Madonna fallen so far from popular acclaim that a full description of her stance is going to mean more to people than her name?

Grammys 2010: Where's the polka?

The polka-less Grammys shortlist has been been birthed out. Beyonce is leading on the most nominations front, which we think is the music industry's way of telling her she's looking old now.

Here - as is now traditional - is the full shortlist. It's bloody long, so if you're not interested in the detail, click here to leap to the bottom.

Welcome back.
Perhaps it's a sign that I'm losing it, but this seems to be - if you ignore the cramming in of Beatles nominations and... well, a lot of the list - closer in line with what people actually listen to. By which I mean, they've put Lady GaGa on the list.

Not sure how MGMT or The Ting Tings qualify for the best new act - sure, they're wonderful, but "for a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." This covers October 2008 to August 2009. Both their debut albums were released before the start of the period; Shut Up And Let Me Go - which, surely, established the Ting Ting's identity, came out in the US in April 2008. Versions of Kids were being released as far back as 2004. I don't want to snatch the prize from either of these bands but... how does that work, exactly?
