Has everyone got an iPod yet?

Suggestions that the iPod market were saturated have been rejected by Apple's COO Tim Cook, who claims that 40% of iPod sales in the last quarter of 2007 were to people who'd never owned an iPod before.

Which, if accurate, is double good news for Apple - not only is it bringing in large numbers of new people who've decided 'today, I shall buy one of these iPods I hear about', but also means roughly seventeen million people who've previously purchased a player are upgrading (or maybe adding a second player). Cook, at least, is confident that there's more room for growth in the market.

No figures for people swapping from or to Zunes, of course.

Or people replacing broken iPods. Which is a LOT of people.

Uh Huh. And exactly where did you get that info? I don't know anyone who has ever had an iPod break. I know they do break from time to time, but I have yet to meet anyone who has actually experienced it.

I know people who work in Apple stores and met people who do iPod return deliveries, and they see tons of dead iPods. Less so the newer, flash-memory ones like the Nano, more the big 40/80gb models. "Whirr-whirr-click" is the sound to look out for. Then the screen gives you the sad face and you check your warranty (Apple's default is 1-year, prob a good idea to buy it from somewhere that offers you more than that). I'm surprised the short lifespan doesn't get more press. Although they are very good when they do work...
