Rock magazine circulation: Goodbye, dear readers

The latest batch of ABC magazine circulation figures have been released, and comparing year-on-year makes grim reading - here's the key titles, with their current sales figures and, in brackets, what they were doing twelve months ago:

Kerrang! - 76,937 (85,377)
NME - 64,033 (73,008)
Q - 131,330 (140,282)
Mojo - 106,218 (114,183)
Uncut - 91,028 (93,678)

So, Kerrang has extended its lead over NME, but it's unlikely they'll be much in the mood for celebrating. And with space for magazines coming under ever tighter competition in the shops and stores of the UK, the number of chance purchasers are likely to dwindle further. There's not much love around for the pop papers today.

Q would've retained my subscription if they hadn't insisted on having an article on U2 every single month. I told their subscription department that when they rang to ask why I'd cancelled, and I'm sure they thought I was kidding.

Do Bono and co sponsor that mag or summat?

I still subscribe to Q since it's an annual Christmas gift but there's no way I would buy it out of choice. Apart from the Bono obsession, it's turned into "Pointless Lists Monthly". "Best Albums of The Last Ten Years...(You Never Know, They Might've Changed Since We Last Did This A Few Months Ago)" etc.

spence - that's uncanny, that's exactly what occurred when I cancelled my sub too. Except that I think my response was more along the lines of "because Bono's a c**t".

Tis a shame, Q invented the piss-taking photo captions for rock mags and the "Who The Hell Does (insert name of self-regarding popstar here) Think He Is?" character asassination interviews they used to do were utter utter genius.

I used to gain some horrified fascination watching Q's slow transformation into a lad-mag with token ten-best-album lists, but I finally cancelled the subscription when they actually started bundling the magazine with adverts for porn.

Hrm, I don't know, I'm female but for me that might be a possible plus. Of course, I suppose it would depend on the format/quality of said porn and accompanying adverts.
