Oh, look... now this joke has gone too far, too

What might have been remembered as an amusing Eurovision evening is now being dragged out too long, as Lordi announce plans to make a horror movie:

"Lordi goes to the twilight zone is what you can say," said the singer, whose real name is Tomi Putaansuu.

"All of the influences of this image comes from the horror films and the horror genre, so it is kind of natural for this band to have our own horror film," said Putaansuu.

But the reason why Lordi worked at Eurovision was the juxtaposition of cheap horror masks in a glitzy context. Putting those cheap masks in a horror movie just throws away the joke, surely? Now, a screwball romantic comedy... that, we'd pay to see.

Haven't they seen what happens when you try to move a faintly-entertaining TV idea to the 'big screen'? It never works. On The Buses, Are You Being Served, probably Man About the House...

For a start, the law states that they're only allowed one plot, which is the whole cast going on holiday. Whilst I can see some comic potential in Lordi struggling to master a French lavatory, this would probably only manage to hold the average audience for around 45 minutes (80 in America). Beyond that, they're in trouble.

I suppose they could let Disney handle the project and turn it into a straight-to-Cinemagic film which gets shown on one of their grotty channels between 'Lilo and Stich 2' and 'Mulan 2', every Sunday afternoon until the end of time. This has the added benefit of allowing them another storyline template, in which the band have to win a talent contest to save Old Mr Cooper's diner from being closed down. Then they'd need to find another band to play the baddies who tried to cheat to win.

Wonder what Green Jelly are doing these days?

The Likely Lads film wasn't bad, though. And Porridge sort of worked.

Green Jelly? Setting up the amps for Green Day, probably.

what do you mean "wasn't bad" and "sort of worked"? they were both classics!!!

On that subject, there's a great section in the new TV Cream book ("Anatomy of Cinema") about sitcom spin-offs. Somehow I don't think Lordi's film will quite reach the standards of "I Only Arsked!"

The funny thing here though, is that somehow the subject of Eurovision-based films descended quickly into the subject of sitcom spin-offs. Speaks volumes if you ask me!

Come to think of it, have none of you seen ABBA The Movie? That alone is proof that Eurovision artists are capable of horror movies.

Then again Lordi only need to look at the post-'68 cinema career of Cliff to realise their mistake.

I've not seen the Likely Lads one - I might try and look it out over the weekend (as long as it includes the 'Whatever Happened to Me' theme tune which, unless I'm mistaken, is the greatest TV theme ever). I vaguely recall Porridge... Did they have a coach-trip to dig a hole somewhere? I suppose that's as close as a show set in a prison could get to the legally-obliged Holiday theme.

My goodness, it's all here!
