Where is Robbie Williams playing these days?

I suppose if you're Robbie Williams, you'd be lucky to get a gig anywhere these days, but what a surprise to discover him headlining a gig in Tblisi. Not any old gig, either - one paid for the government.

Maroon Five and Jose Carreras are also taking part in the - let's call them "celebrations", shall we?

And that's not all:

In addition to the Government-organised activities, Check in Georgia will also include events and activities hosted by private companies. Furthermore, agricultural and product displays including wine and cheese festivals will offer the best of local production to visitors.
It's a wonder they could keep Alex James away from it all.

So, Robbie Williams getting a payday from the Georgian government. That's alright, isn't it?

I mean, the Georgian government isn't terrible. They even endorsed a queer pride event last year, as Amnesty reports:
The International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) proceeded peacefully in Tbilisi in a discreet location on 17 May
Well, that's lovely. Although... why was it discreet?
The authorities had refused to guarantee the event’s safety unless it was held at a specific location without any prior public announcement.
Perhaps not entirely in keeping with the spirit of the day.

Now, you could say that it's not Williams beef. Why should he decide where to play based on attitudes to queer people?

But his Georgian government paymasters are problematic in other ways, too:
On 15 March, approximately 50 supporters of the Georgian Dream ruling coalition forcibly entered the local offices of [opposition party] UNM and an affiliated group in Zugdidi, armed with wooden sticks, throwing stones and smashing windows. Nine people were reported injured, including one of the police officers who tried to intervene but were outnumbered by the attackers.

Concerns over freedom of expression were voiced by local NGOs and political commentators who believed that a lawsuit by a former shareholder of Rustavi 2 against its current owners was prompted by the government to deprive the opposition of its main mouthpiece. On 21 October, the director of Rustavi 2 reported having been blackmailed, claiming that the security services threatened to release intimate footage of him unless he resigned. The Tbilisi City Court found in favour of the former shareholder, and Rustavi 2 managers were forcibly replaced with pro-government caretakers on 5 November, against the Constitutional Court ruling that an appeal had to be heard first.

On 17 September, the Constitutional Court ruled to release Gigi Ugulava, an opposition activist and former Mayor of the capital, Tbilisi. It deemed his pre-trial detention since 2013 – on charges of misappropriation of public funds and money laundering – illegal as it exceeded the nine-month legal limit. The Court’s judges came under heavy criticism from senior government officials for this decision and were threatened with violence by some pro-government groups. On 18 September, Gigi Ugulava was sentenced to four-and-a-half years’ imprisonment on account of these charges, and rearrested the same day.
But Maroon 5 and Robbie Williams, almost certainly, wouldn't find themselves on the hard end of this dodgy justice.

To be fair to Williams, it's possible he didn't entirely feel thrilled at his new bosses. The English language Agenda.ge tried to talk up his enthusiasm:
The British singer shared his thoughts about his Tbilisi performance to his social media followers on Twitter on Thursday:
Under this, they reproduce this tweet to illustrate Williams' sharing:

So the best example Agenda could find of Williams' thoughts was a photo of him looking like a middle aged man waiting for his wife to emerge from a BHS restaurant toilet and a slew of hashtags that read like a particularly weak contestant on Catchphrase trying to work out what Mr Chips is telling them.

Maroon 5 no longer heading for China

Maroon 5's planned dates in China aren't going to happen now. There's speculation as to why:

No official explanation has been given with a statement from Live Nation, the band’s promoter, alluding only to an unspecified “reason”.

The cancellations sparked speculation that a tweet sent by Jesse Carmichael, the group’s keyboard player, was responsible.

In the message, posted on July 4, Carmichael sent birthday wishes to the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The musician reportedly attended a party celebrating the Buddhist leader’s 80th birthday in the United States.

The tweet, since deleted, linked to a photograph on Instagram that was also later removed.
It could be the tweet was the reason. What I suspect happened is someone in power actually heard Maroon 5 and started combing the social media output of the band looking for an excuse.

Adam Levine dusted in the street

It might look like the aftermath of a party at George Osborne's house, but it's actually Adam Levine after he left the Jimmy Kimmel studio and got attacked with sugar.

Sure, it looks bad, but at least it was granulated sugar. Imagine if it had been cane sugar. Or a block of molasses.

Entertainment Weekly suggests that Levine might have brought the attack on himself:
"Your sugar. Yes, please. Won't you come and put it down on me?"
That might be one of his lyrics, but pretty much everything he's written seems to demand stuff be thrown at Levine. Doesn't mean we should, though.

People's Choice 2013: At last, some good news for The X Factor

It might be looking increasingly clapped-out on both sides of the Atlantic, but there was a small glimmer of hope for The X Factor, as it picked up a People's Choice Award.

Okay, it was in a category for just Competition TV Shows, and the same sophisticated electorate gave the Fantasy TV Show award to Supernatural ("It's Supernatural That A Programme Which Should Have Been Cancelled Two Seasons Back Is Still On The Air" to give it its full title.) But a win is a win, right?

Even more unusually, Maroon 5 have taken the band category. Maroon 5. I checked, these aren't the results from about ten years ago. Especially since the runners-up were No Doubt, Green Day, Linkin Park and Train.

The one genuine surprise in the list is that One Direction's Whatever Makes You Beautiful crushed both Call Me Maybe and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together in the Song prize.

Gordon in the morning: He hit me, and it felt like a crossover hit

Gordon interviews Maroon 5's Adam Levine this morning. Do you know what makes Levine cross?

I’m of the belief that because our culture has changed so much, people don’t find that exclusivity very important any more, which I love because I hate it.

People who tell me they only like one kind of music, I want to punch them in the face.
Violence is never the answer, although if people tell you they only like one kind of music, and it's Maroon 5, you might struggle to not make an exception.

The Sun clearly realises that Levine's dull in his own right, as most of the page reporting the interview is given over to three massive photos of Behati Prinsloo in her pants. You wonder if they'd even have bothered to talk to him if he didn't provide an excuse for lingerie pictures.

Maroon 5 now at war with Fox News

Parody news channel Fox News has gone to war with Maroon 5.

Fox quite likes using Maroon 5's music in the gaps between its swivel-eyed skrikecasts; Adam Levine has asked them to stop.

Fox doesn't like being told what to do. (It can work out what the Republicans want it to do all by itself). So they've wittily shot back:

Fox News hosts Greg Gutfeld and Andy Levy both replied to the singer on Twitter, each mocking the "Dear Fox News" phrasing of Levine's tweet. "Dear Adam, that's not music," wrote Gutfeld. Levine elaborated slightly in his tweet, writing "Dear @AdamLevine, don't make crappy fucking music ever again. Thank you."
Ha-ha, that's telling him. Telling him that the music you play on network is rubbish, admittedly, but telling him all the same.

How you show mutual respect

Trouble behind the scenes at The Voice?. No no no, reassures ContactMusic:

Christina Aguilera has put to rest rumours of a feud with Adam Levine by recording a track with his band Maroon 5.

The stars, both currently serving as judges on hit U.S. talent show The Voice, have ended speculation they don't get along by collaborating on new song Moves Like Jagger.
Oh, yes. It's scientifically impossible for two people who hate each other to appear on the same record. It has never, ever happened in the history of recorded sound.

Maroon 5 cuts out the middle men, gets fans to do their job

Maroon 5 - yes, it turns out they're still going for some reason - are inviting fans to tell them what their music sounds like.

Given the sludge of their records sounds like it's been created by a series of focus groups anyway, it's not entirely clear what difference this might make.

I think we're supposed to assume that up until now, the band's songs have been created by the five members working together; by inviting all their fans to collaborate instead, they're going to see what it's like if fewer people create a track.

The recording session, to be held in London, will be steamed live on the internet and the band will work with fans in real time to create the one-off track.

Fans will appear to the group through a movement based projection system, which will stream their thoughts and comments to the whole studio space rather than the group - Adam Levine, James Valentine, Jesse Carmichael, Michael Madden and Matt Flynn - having to gather around a computer screen.
Yes, this idea is so dull, they're trying to make having a projector sound like it's an exciting development. Jesus, guys, even the monthly East Midlands Region Wagon Wheel Sales Team meeting hooks a laptop to a projector.

The really heartbreaking thing is that isn't even something Maroon 5 are doing because it's a good idea, but are instead doing it because Coke are paying them:
The session takes place in association with Coca Cola, and Joe Belliotti, Director of Global Entertainment Marketing for the company, said: "We are excited to be working with Maroon 5. "They have worked closely with us to help shape the event and ensure the session will be a fun and engaging experience for fans no matter where in the world they are.

"This is the most ambitious and experimental effort in music Coca-Cola has ever undertaken."
Really, Mr Belliotti? Wasn't attempting to build a Coke-branded digital music download store and unseat Apple as the key provider of online music not a little bit more ambitious than putting an internet-enabled PC in a recording studio?

Still, it'll be a lot of fun, I'm sure, and can I just stress that logging in simply to suggest writing a song about how great Pepsi is, or the way trades unionists whose activities were awkward for Coca-Cola had a nasty habit of turning up dead would be a terrible abuse of the generosity of the Coca-Cola company. If that's the sort of thing you're planning, you might want to keep well away from the project's website.

Unlikely opening lines to music stories of our time: Number one in a series

From PopMatters:

With the respect Maroon 5 is given within the pop music industry, it’s hard to believe the band has produced only two albums.

Respect? Maroon 5? The closest, surely, Maroon 5 get to respect is when giggling small children take care to make sure the spunking cock that they've drawn on Adam Levine's back looks well defined and has a fair level of pubic hair included.

Levine: Something of a charmer

Adam Levine - what a guy: he reckons he dumped Maria Sharapova because of her behaviour during sex:

She wouldn’t make any noise during sex.

"I can't tell you how disappointed I was. I really thought, like a lot of guys, that she'd be the loud screaming type.

"But instead, she just lay there like a dead frog."

Adam, sweetheart, as most IT support desks could tell you: if you're not getting the results you expect, it's usually down to operator error. Something wrong with the input.
"She even got angry if I started to moan, said it 'ruined her concentration."

She was probably afraid you were about to burst into song.
"It was so disillusioning that I went on Paxil for a month afterwards.

"Really, it was much more of a shock than when I found out there's no such thing as the Easter Bunny."

Really? Or was it more like the time you realised you couldn't fly, Adam?

Still, it's not like he's going to need to worry in the future - who's going to have sex with a man who - if it doesn't live up to his Porkys fantasises - goes to the press to whine like a fifteen year-old about it?

Get a date with Adam Levine

Obviously, not with him, as who'd want that? No, the Maroon Five singer has given his tips to American teens about how to get a date:

"Say or do something that's out of the ordinary... It's not about what perfume you're wearing or if your shoes are cute. If you do something with purpose that is different than what everybody else does, then it makes you stand out."

Of course, coming from a man whose band dribbles out a dirge so conservative even David Cameron's big tent would find it difficult to contain it, the advice to "stand out" is strange - and, of course, what could be better advice to teens who are already so badly in need of advice about how to get a date that they're turning to him that acting out of the ordinary is a great idea. Oh, yes, American High Schools are known for their tender embrace of the unusual, the quirky, the other, aren't they?

Newton dislikes Maroon 5 - suddenly

We're a little puzzled by the meandering Woman Wears Yellow Dress story which Victoria Newton has run with today, which then suddenly turns into a spot of Maroon 5 bashing:

More middle-of-the-road than catseyes, US rockers MAROON 5 somehow scored their second UK No1 album last night with It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.

Shame on you if either album is in your record collection.

While Victoria has a point, it's a little surprising to see her so full of hate for the band. Perhaps part of the way they "somehow" sold lots of their album would have been the simpering press coverage, such as in, erm, Bizarre?
I'VE had plenty of American bands come over to the UK and bid to win my Caners' League - so it's nice to find some Yanks who would prefer to walk off with Bizarre's Shagger prize instead.

MAROON 5 frontman ADAM LEVINE - who was linked to a string of celeb babes including JESSICA SIMPSON and NATASHA BEDINGFIELD before finding love with his new lady - told me: "Girls influence everything.[...]

You can hear more of my interview with Adam - and a preview of his band's new album It Won't Be Soon Before Long - on this week's Bizarre Podcast.

Oddly, then offering exclusive samples of the album, Newton forgot to mention that purchasing it was a thing to be ashamed of. Funny, that.

Levine the dream

The problem with the identification of the Pink Pound, and the corporate need to try and "target the gay market" is that you wind up with awkward situations like Adam Levine of Maroon Five doing interviews with The Advocate trying to get in touch with the band's gay audience:

"There are beautiful men out there. Antonio Banderas is gorgeous. Well, maybe not so much anymore. He peaked around 'Desperado'.

"I mean, every male secretly wants to have sex with Brad Pitt, but that's a given."

"Men have a certain camaraderie with each other that's easygoing and kind of simple, when you think about it. Sometimes men and women clash mentally."

God, it's like that bit in A Very Peculiar Practice where Peter Davison's trying to cope with talking to a lesbian, isn't it?

Levine concludes by revealing that blokes don't queue up to have sex with him:
"Not Hey, you wanna make out?' It doesn't happen to me. I don't know why."

Because going up and saying "lets make out" is how every bloke who finds men attractive goes about things, isn't it? Apart, of course, from the ones who just fling you to the ground and start to hump you.

We would love to see the look on Levine's face if Brad Pitt did turn up with a ball gag, a cheeky wink and a pass from Angelina Jolie.
