EVERY DOWNLOAD COUNTS: As 2005 marches on with its main purpose, being the year when singles turn from solid discs to marketing concepts, the BPI has announced downloads will now be counted when awarding singles silver, gold or platinum status. The most interesting thing here, of course, is that when the award purely recognised physical numbers, it was done on the basis of shipping; the shipping figures will now be added to actual download sales, thereby creating a confusing situation where a track that sells mainly into the download market actually has to find purchasers to get its gold record, while bands like the Quo who rely on people nipping down to Woolworths won't have to sell a single record to get theirs; just persuade a lot of shops to stock them.
