PATTI SMITH: THAT'LL UPSET JOHN GIBSON

We're not sure it's punk, but Patti Smith has been presented with the insignia of Commander of the Order of the Arts and Letters by the French government. We imagine they were especially taken by her references to Rimbaud.

Smith is thrilled to be honoured by France:

"I have vowed to live up to this honor in my work and my conduct," she said. "I can't explain what I feel like. It has uplifted me, and I will work very hard to earn it."

We're not sure - since, supposedly, the award is presented for achievement rather than as an encouragement - how she's going to set out to earn it, although taking it back to the US and standing outside the Fox News Channel window might be a start. The channel has recently sunk to a new low in racist baiting of the French - on their radio network, John Gibson called for terrorists to attack Paris as - in his strange worldview - nobody would care:

By the way, just wanted to tell you people, we missed -- the International Olympic Committee missed a golden opportunity today. If they had picked France, if they had picked France instead of London to hold the Olympics, it would have been the one time we could look forward to where we didn't worry about terrorism. They'd blow up Paris, and who cares?
