ON THE TELEVISION

The launch of Kate Bush's first pop video in seventy three years was quite an event, and Channel 4 rightly gave it its own slot in the schedules. A gesture only slightly undermined by them having given Will Young and Green Day the same honour this week. The video isn't quite as, well, floatingly lovely as the single - it's the tale of how Elvis' white jump suit reunites itself with Elvis, who's living with yetis in the mountains. (King of the mountains, do you see?). We guess there's something funny about Kate aligning herself with the idea of a pop star who's gone off to live in seclusion in the mountains to avoid the public gaze, but beyond that, it's a lot more makeweight than we were hoping for.

But then her videos never were very good. Of course, everybody enjoyed them, but that's not the same thing.

EDIT: We were just about to have our tea so forgot to mention that Mr Red Penguin has the links you need to pretend that you're Channel 4.

Meanwhile, BBC2's treament of Top of the Pops continues to suggest that, for all Roly Keating's kind words, he views it as a bit of a pain, like an elderly aunt living in your spare room pending a law change on euthanasia. Tonight's edition got shunted from it's supposedly key, 7pm fixed slot to make room for... the 2005 teaching awards, a programme of so little interest (even to teachers) that Teacher TV pretended to be busy when they were offered the live coverage.

no good kate bush videos? "Cloudbusting" and "Experiment IV" definitely go further than the "pleaseant to watch" category.

Classics both, but you knew that, otherwise you wouldn't have covered your arse so delicately with your get out clause.

You're turning into a politician, lad. Being able to express an opinion by gently providing yourself with an escape chute in every sentence or paragraph is all very well and safe, but becomes rather dull very quickly.

Just get on with it, k? K.

K...

I can assure you it wasn't a getout clause... it was actually written thinking of the Babooshaka. Which was a rubbish video in all senses, but... people enjoyed.

I had forgotten the Cloudbusting video, though.

ah. Enjoyed like Pan's People. Gotcha.

Mind you, I'm sure that plenty of people "enjoyed" her pretending to be a little boy in the "Cloudbusting" video also.

Not me tho. Oh no.

KB's video's were generally a bit rubbish. I would recommend watching her Old Grey Whistle Test performance of Running Up That Hill from 1986.

Damn, I have, again and again and again and again!
