Something to listen to: Babyshambles
The Times is offering a track from the Babyshambles album for download and consumption; alongside, they run a commentary by Adam Ficek on the making of the new record. Apparently, it was no more strenuous than the first:
There is a lot of expectation with this album, but that is nothing new – we had that with the first one, Down With Albion. People criticised that one for being underproduced but Mick Jones did a sterling job. At the time Pete was on the verge of going to prison.
Hasn't Pete Doherty been on the verge of going to prison consistently since about 1903 now?
This new album is very, very different:
Shotter’s Nation is a more ambitious record, whisper it, a “crossover” record. The songs are all really strong and it’s not genre-specific like most indie stuff, there are surprises on there. Yes, there is that English Sixties sound, but there’s also a touch of Britpop and Stone Roses.
Goodness, British Invasion, Britpop and Baggy. What a massive range of reference points you're drawing on there - we can see how that would be different from middle-class-white-boy-with-guitar-and-Revolver of "genre-specific" indie stuff.

seven tracks have leaked so far...
seriously, 'deft left hand' is unlike any other indie music at the moment. not 'like any other music ever', but just...in terms of 'now'...it's totally different from everything else on offer. fair play to him, it sounds really out of climate. like the mr soft advert with a chorus by oasis. can you imagine anything worse than that?! that might 'sound' horrible but it actually sounds fucking great, really great. the rest of the songs are pretty decent too. 'baddies boogie' could have fitted right in on the 'this is england' soundtrack. the others are doherty by numbers really...good songs, but nothing particularily 'new' or exciting. but theyre recorded well and his 'singing' is at times very sweet. he sounds like a drunk child. sometimes he's really off key though and you wish he'd had another go. overall it pisses on pretty much every other indie album ive heard this year. but that's not saying much. i'd say it's up there with the new mia album and edgar jones's newie too. i had hoped it would be good enough to silence his critics but i get the impression he could write and release something as good as 'there she goes' and it would still get mauled by everyone. oh well.
it's a good album. sadly babyshambles are now being advertised on mtv2. fucking lame, parlophone.
It's a fair point, anon that Doherty has to work very hard to please - the problem with first album was that he didn't even work hard enough for "that'll do".
It's true that there are people who, if he turned in something on a par equivalent of Shakespeare set to Beethoven, would still mark him down.
However, his bigger problem are the people who accept his half-finished, half-arsed work and don't reject it on the grounds that he could, and should, do much better. Doherty's problem is that he believes the sycophants rather than heeds his critics.
