TAM commandments: 9. Never trust a crusty

Pretty good advice, as even the best-intentioned of them will go corporate on you. Take Chumbawamba - here, they sing Coal Not Dole, as socialist an anthem as you could hope for. In a few years, though, they'd be flogging their songs as soundtracks to car adverts.

At least you could always tell that Sting was a git.

Sorry but I have to set the record straight. Chumbawamba were given $100,000 for the use of one of their songs by General Motors. The entirety of the money went to anti-corporate groups including CorpWatch.

So, in effect, GM sponsored their opposition. Maybe they should have just got Sting...

Fair point, Eyetie, but:

The band had already made a big fuss about turning down another car ad because of the manufacturer's links to weapons manufacturing - but GM manufacture weapons, too

and

whatever you do with the money, you're still endorsing the product and selling cars. What's the bit in Jesus Christ Superstar?

Think of the things
You can do with that money
Choose any charity
Give to the poor
We've noted your motives
We've noted your feelings
This isn't blood money
It's a fee nothing more
