Guitarobit: Casey Calvert
The guitarist with Hawthorne Heights, Casey Calvert, died in his sleep on Friday.
The band have issued at a statement:
Today is probably the worst day ever. Its with our deepest regrets that we have to write this. Casey Calvert passed away in his sleep last night. We found out this afternoon before sound-check. We've spent the entire day trying to come to grips with this and figure out as much as possible. At this time we're not sure what exactly happened. Just last night he was joking around with everyone before he went to bed. We can say with absolute certainty that he was not doing anything illegal. Please, out of respect to Casey and his family, don't contribute or succumb to any gossip you may hear. We don't want his memory to be tainted in the least. Casey was our best friend. He was quirky and awesome and there will truly be no others like him! His loss is unexplainable. As soon as we know more we will let you know.
Calvert was 26 years old. He had lived through some volatile times as a member of Hawthorne Heights, including fighting a battle to be freed from the terms of contract with Victory Records which the band maintained was unfair, and becoming embroiled in a seedy attempt to nobble NeYo's sales by encouraging fans to make it difficult to find his album. The band claimed this was down to the label and they knew nothing about it.
With or without dirty tricks, Hawthorne Heights built an impressive fan base; their second album, If Only You Were Lonely, made it to number three in the Billboard album charts early last year.
[Update: 26/11/07 - Billboard are reporting the cause of death was probably asthma]

Sometimes life is just too damn short, and this is a sad and very unfortunate example. Just to think...Casey was so upbeat, a devoted (and proud) vegetarian, a devoted husband, and a beloved musician, bandmate and friend to many. There is so much that can be said, but I think that the best thing right now for his wife, the band and all his close friends is to respect their privacy and give them all the time they will need to be alone and deal with this unbelievably tragic occurance. May Casey Calvert Rest In Peace.

When I press play on If "Only You Were Lonely" on my iTunes, I brace myself for the strong lyrics and singing style Casey uses at the beginning of "This Is Who We Are". Since my fanship started, I have been especially fond of watching Casey on stage, and hearing his voice. He was an inspiration to my music writing, and he also brought me very close to your excellent work.
I understand how much this must hurt to lose such a close friend. My emotions let me think that he was a sort of older brother that just isn't there any more. He will always be in my memories and thoughts.

I was never a big fan of Hawthorne Heights, but this is still incredibly sad news. They were good musicians, and great performers. My condolences go out to the band, friends, family, fans...everyone touched in some way by his death.

Hey Casey, you guys i'm so sorry I accually felt my heart hurt when I heard this a friend told me and now I cry at night more than I normally do. I cry because Hawthorne Heights was the only thing I had. I'm going to send mail to Simple Plan so If they run in to you they ill give your friends(the rest of the guys) the clay emo heart I made and painted black. Yeah I'm emo it doesn't matter right now though, I'll miss you I treally hope the band stays together though for your sake I think all the other (like me) were hurt more by this loss along with the other friends and family mainly for us because you and the guys were all somwe of had I will always morn this, the saddest thing about this is I only found this out on monday, and on the finding out of your death I was happy that day (me not know of this) I got a dwarf hamster but now because of this I nicknamed hid Casey for your skae now I pray EVERY night just for you and the guys. Also my dream was to go to warptour which I was going to but lost my friends number therefore I couldn't call to get the tickets I'm very sorry and when I was reading comment on a different site about this on Monday, I saw some wrong commets and then chewed thaat person out I would be at the funeral but saddly can't. This was all life changing for me very. I told my friend after he told me 'I think I just died inside.' and 'Out of all the things I could besad about, I never new I could be this sad.' On that day I listened to Saying Sorry over and over and haven't listened to any of you guys since then. When I told my mom yeterday she said it was probally od. I shouted and scream no it wasn't I got chewed out for it but a brusing beating would be worth it gladly she didn't she just yelled back - still worth it. wow, i was devistated when i found this out. and it relly pissed me off that he passed away for no reason, and this really hits a place in my heart because i lost a pretty good friend nearly a year ago in a drunk driving accident. but then i thought, "my friend had to suffer till his death, at least casey died peacfully with his body not touched" so i know its sad, but we gotta move on, so think positivly, at least he wasnt hurt, and im sure he is happy =]

I remember when i met Casey and the rest of the guys from Hawthorne Heights. Probably the best night of my life!!!! He was sooooo sweet, down to earth..and SOOOOO FUNNY!!!!! I cant believe he is gone. I live in Ohio and i attended the visitation...one of the WORST days of my life!! I couldnt believe what i was their for. Never in a million years did i think i would live to see this tragic day in rock n roll history. We will never forget you Screamo!! I will miss seeing your crazy butt jump around on stage at the HH shows. It just wont be the same without you. :( R.I.P. Casey..U deserve it!

I was sitting in Starbucks when i heard of Casey's death. Right there, I broke down in tears. I never got the chance to see them live but i was always looking them up on youtube to watch live videos. I am deeply sorry and in pain for all the friends, family, and fans of HH. I remember the first time I heard them, i was with my friend and she played "Ohio Is For Lovers". Im a huge fan of guitars and fell in love with his talent at that moment. I hope HH stays together. I love all they have done and want to see more come from them. Even at a loss without Casey there.

I regret not meeting you at least once Casey. Ive followed HH from the beginning, from the young A Day In The Life all the way up to what you are today. WHen i heard the news from my brother who was a techy at the gig at the time... i broke down. I could hardly breathe i was crying so much. Since then i've learnt how to play all your guitar riffs, every time i play, i dedicate them to you.
I really looked up to you. I guess i still do. There isnt a day that goes by that i dont think about you. For some reason that im not really sure about, you really touched my heart. The whole band did, but you in a different way somehow.
I love you, we all do. Our Hearts Are Heavy And Light. You're the only screamer for me.
