Phil Collins brought the Zeppelin down

In a deft piece of "I wouldn't want to say anything bad, but...", Jimmy Page has blamed the failed Led Zep reunion for Live Aid on the drummers:

"I don't want to blame anyone but the two drummers (Phil Collins and Tony Thompson of Chic) hadn't learned their parts.

"You can get away with that in a pop band but not with Led Zeppelin."

And when they came to cart the equipment off the stage, bloody Collins had pissed off in Concorde leaving them to do all the work. Drummers, eh?

Phil Collins is enough to bring anybody down

Load of crap. First, Phil remained with the band and did interviews for several hours. Second, Page - one of the wasted-talent drunks/addicts of all rock history after the Zep days - was stumbling, slurring, sticky-fingers wasted; Plant couldn't get within half a mile of a note belonging in Stairway or Whole Lotta Love; and yes, the whole thing was under-rehearsed. While you're busy hating Phil, keep in mind that he was Plant's drummer of choice for a tour and two albums, Clapton's for a tour and three albums, and an in-demand session drummer on several dozen albums by some of the best known and less known artists of the 70s and 80s. His work during that period is cited by a large number of the finest drummers and bassists working as some of the landmark grooves in modern drumming.

He's still an arsehole. I think that's why people hate him, rather than his drumming ability.

I admit I've never cared much for Collins (though as pointed out, his actual drumming ability is of no small repute)...but slagging off Tony Thompson? Them's fighting words...
