Twittergem: Tim Westwood

There has been some debate around Bruno. Does it expose and ridicule homophobia, or does it legitimise and amplify it?

@westwood provides the answer:

This Bruno lookin flight attendant has just invited me to go up in his cockpit - that smells fishy to me

There's a third option: that Tim Westwood is a fucking tool.

Well, I still maintain he has to be defended in certain circumstances - whenever anyone of the Right condemns him, for one - but that doesn't mean that what he is part of is progressive *on its own terms*. I've never denied that much of hip-hop is so homophobic that the Left would hate it if it was made by white people ... many Leftists, myself included, sometimes feel nervous about criticising *any* aspect of hip-hop, or indeed Westwood himself, because of who we'd then be easily confused with. Even more than certain rappers themselves, he's probably the arch example of someone who gets away with things he wouldn't get away with if he were not such an obvious Right-wing hate figure (for different reasons).
