X + Y = 1

Despite the best attempts of the NME to whip up a three-way battle, to the surprise of nobody, Coldplay are this week's number one album; the White Stripes come in at three and Oasis' The Truth? You Couldn't Handle The Truth sticks at two. Nothing there very surprising, but remember the observation earlier in the week that Coldplay was outselling everything else in the Top 20 put together - which suggests about the only wise move the Gallagher brothers have made in the last five years was not to throw down the gauntlet to Coldplay by releasing albums on the same day.

The Tears' The Tears - the obtuse angle in the nme threesome - comes in at number 15.

U2, however, are being outsold in the singles chart by the frog. It's week of release for U2; the Frog is a badly animated ringtone that has already had two weeks at number one. It's doing really well, isn't it?
