GENNARO CASTALDO WATCH

Due to The Sun's habit of only putting up half the story until that day's issue has gone, we didn't realise that His Master's Voice Gennaro Castaldo popped up for a comment in yesterday's DualDisc story:

Gennaro Castaldo, of HMV, added: "The idea is all about trying to give extra value to the customer."

Extra value to the customer? But aren't they more expensive than single discs? But tell us, Gennaro, who will buy these things?

"If you are into a particular artist, you will get the visual content as well as the audio, so I think lot of people will enjoy seeing that too."

We're not quite sure how the disc can tell if you're "into" an artist enough to decide if it will show the visual content, but we're marvelling at the science already. And you know, it hadn't occured to us that people might enjoy looking at pictures of their favourite stars.

But, tell us, Gennaro - will this be a success?

"Potentially, there could be lot of demand but it depends on how they are promoted to the public and how many titles are released."

Hmm... yes, you're probably right - "there's a chance they could sell lots, but it depends if they make lots available." Insightful.

"It’s only Sony BMG at this stage but needs to be whole industry.
"If that happens, they can achieve a lot of impact and will take off as other formats have done in the past."

Yes, other formats like Digital Compact Cassette, consumer DAT, the MiniDisc...
