THE PEEL MEMORIAL

As John Peel Day gets nearer - part of us thinks it should be a public holiday, part of us keeps thinking of the Frasier Crane Day episode of Frasier - details are emerging of what to expect: First, the album, which is partly for charity and incongrously being released through "Warner Strategic Marketing":

CD1
Lonnie Donegan - Lost John
Tyrannosaurus Rex - Deborah
Pink Floyd - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
Jim Hendrix Experience - Spanish Castle Magic
Van Morrison - Sweet Thing
David Bowie - Life On Mars
The Doors - Five To One
Tim Buckley - Song For A Siren
Rod Stewart/The Faces - Stay With Me
The Misunderstood - I Can Take You To The Sun
Country Joe & The Fish - Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine
Fairport Convention - Meet On The Ledge
Captain Beefheart - Big Eyed Beans From Vegas
Loudon Wainwright III - Be Careful There Is A Baby In The House
Roy Buchanan - I Am a Lonesome Fugitive
The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band - Mr Apollo
The Ramones - I Don't Want To Walk Around With You
The Clash - Complete Control
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
New Order - Ceremony

CD2
The Undertones - Teenage Kicks
Altered Images - Happy Birthday
The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
The Cocteau Twins - Pearly-Dewdrops Drops
Jesus & Mary Chain - Sidewalking
Blur - Song 2
Culture - Lion Rock
Billy Bragg - New England
Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding
The Wedding Present - Brassneck
PJ Harvey - Sheila Na Gig
Pulp - Common People
The Fall - Theme From Sparta F.C.
Super Furry Animals - Something For The Weekend
Nina Nastasia - Bird Of Cuzco
The Delgados - Pull The Wires From The Wall
Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painer Jane
Laura Cantrell - Two Seconds
Orbital - Chime
Elmore James - Dust My Blues

Meanwhile, the lead-off concert for the events has got a line-up: it's going to take place on John Peel Eve, 12th October, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall:

New Order
Super Furry Animals
Laura Cantrell
Misty In Roots
The Fall
Venetian Snares
Jawbone

The slightly disappointing aspect to all this is that both set-ups are looking backwards over the shoulder - and, yes, there might be a lot more to the events than just the album and the main gig, but since Peel was always more interested in what's next rather than what was, it's a pity the centrepieces don't reflect that more. We suspect had he been asked to choose bands for the show, for example, at least one act probably wouldn't have even formed at the time of his death.

Also: surely a more appopriate Altered Images track would have been Song Sung Blue, which he whistled on.

Oh come on, don't sign up for this "new music" rubbbish! The absolutely most important thing about John Peel was that he played *everything* not just new music, but also old music that nobody else plays these days. Sure he was always on the look out for new stuff but you could rely on hearing something from the 20s too. And that is more importnat is it keeps everyone in touch with their history.

But old or new, what marked out a Peel show was the songs were, generally, stuff you'd either not heard before, or hadn't heard for a very, very long time.

Song 2 by Blur doesn't really fall into either of those categories...

Ah. And, of course, Jack White couldn't have gone to Venice because of...?

Virgin Megastore (oooh) on Oxford St, London are doing just as you suggested and putting on a line up of 5 new bands on the 13th October 5 - 9pm - it's all free. Alas the great man didn't choose them himself.
