CLASSIC ROCK'S ALL-TIME ALBUM CHARTS OF ALL-TIME

Classic Rock - apparently roused in response to the NME's recent top 50 - have got a shadowy team of experts together to choose the top 100 UK albums of ever, ever.

Astonishingly, AC/DC have four entries in this chart, despite, erm, being Australian (don't bother firing up the comments, I know the Youngs might have been born in Scotland, but this really is a case of it's not where you're from, it's where you're at.) Even more interestingly, U2 come in with The Joshua Tree. At 100. It's not clear if the low placing is because the album is actually a load overstated bombastic nonesense, or simply because they know U2 aren't British and just couldn't think of any more albums so slipped it in at number 100 as it's sort of there.

Of course, when Muriel Gray once inadvertently described U2 as British on The Tube, she was sent a collage made out of used condoms which read "IRISH."

The top ten, then, would be:

10. Free - Fire & Water
9. The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street
8. Led Zeppelin - II
7. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
6. The Beatles - Abbey Road
5. David Bowie - The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust...
4. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks...
3. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
2. The Who - Who's Next
1. Led Zeppelin - IV

The Sex Pistols? Snark.

Brian Johnson's a Geordie, which makes a majority of ACDC Brits. Plus, Adam Clayton is English so U2 aren't really pedigree Irish either.

Good points, MC, but:

three of the four albums chosen by the Classic Rock experts feature Bon Scott on vocals and, more to the point, the band formed in Sydney, and are considered Australian by every normal measure.

And U2? Didn't Mr. Bonio once tell the entire world "We're an Irish band, we come from Dublin, Ireland"? I think you know that I'd never argue with Bono's opinion.

No, no, no... it is that the people who compiled the list are so old, they still think Australia is part of the Empire.

Isn't it about time for all those old blokes to give up and just admit that IV/Rune Album/Untitled/whatever is a big pile of pretentious lordoftherings wank from a once good rock band. Or is it just that they're all on the first step of the Stairway to Heaven already.

Rock is dead they said . . . long live rock at least long enough if they haven't been wiped out in a drug fueled binge to do the comeback tour. Good to see Mott in there somewhere, should be further up though, as should those Mod rockers The Small Faces - Ogdens Nut Gone Flake too. Major criteria for position in the chart, album sales? Not the quality or content of the music? You can take Yes out completly while yr at it.Not a single entry for The Kinks? Bloody outrageous!!!!!
