IF YOU SEE A BUS PUMPING SHIT INTO THE IRWELL, THIS WILL BE WHY

Despite an enormously expensive billboard advertising campaign about three or four years ago - over four weeks teaser adverts led to the "I am Dave Matthews" revelation and the "so?" shrug - Dave Matthews Band has never really done much in the way of sales in the UK. As a result, Dave hasn't bothered to play that much here.

Next month, though, Dave will be coming here to give three gigsworth of his fascinating music:

12 Manchester Academy
13 Birmingham Academy
15 London Hammersmith Apollo

This would make mid-May a great time to be in America, I guess.

Considering that he hasn't really done much in the way of sales, how is he managing to play places that large?? Weird.

expats. there are a lot of US expats around. it's much the same when you go to see Wilco (not that I'm comparing the wonderful Wilco to the miserable Dave Matthews band).

Big Dave sells out stadiums back in the US, and having saw Jason Mraz at Shep's Bush last month, I can testify that even moderate sales back home can be enough to fill a mid-sized venue full of MOR college rock-loving ex pats. Woeful. EP.

Dave Matthews gigs, then, are on a similar basis to the way they can get away with charging seven pounds for a small-ish box of Lucky Charms.

Expats will do a lot for a taste of home.
