NEW MANICS: WHAT WILL IT SOUND LIKE?

Yes, yes, we know it's going to wind up sounding a bit like the last Manics album, but that's probably the point.

Nicky Wire has been giving some hints about what's in store:

"James [Dean Bradfield] hates me for saying this, but it's sounding like 'The White Album' played by Guns n' Roses - pure melodies mixed with rock 'n' roll.

"A mix of 'Generation Terrorists' and 'Everything Must Go', that's what we're after."

Couldn't we just have the Generation Terrorists stuff and leave the EMG out the mix?

The horrifying thought is if instead of turning out as The White Album played by Guns N Roses, you get the reverse of the mixture: Chinese Democracy reimagined by Wings, say; or The Spaghetti Incident co-authored by Yoko.

We think, though, this is the closest we're going to get to an admission that recent Manics stuff has been slightly below-par:

"People have told me 'The Love Of Richard Nixon' sounded like the Pet Shop Boys, but you've got to have your wasteland period otherwise you end up regurgitating the same stuff.

"You've got to come back with something amazing and that's why this is such hard work."

The sad thing is, of course, that The Love of Richard Nixon didn't even meet the Pet Shop Boys standards. The Vicious Boys, perhaps.

The Manics seem to have a bit of Guns 'n' Roses fixation when it comes to describing their albums. There was an interview with them round about the time of Motown Junk where they described the upcoming debut album as being 'like a cross between Guns 'n' Roses and Public Enemy'.
