Modest plans

From tomorrow, Modest Mouse's new album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, will be up for preorder on iTunes, ready for its release some time in March.

Are we the only people who are lost about the whole "pre-order on iTunes" thing? Surely the advantage of digital music is that it's instanteous; pre-ordering a download seems like ringing ahead to warn McDonalds they might need to get some patties ready. Sure, in this instance you get some free stuff - but most of it is, well, thin fare indeed.

Presumably, with such a long time between completion and delivery, the idea is to get the cash upfront before the thing leaks for free online?

Eww. I don't like the sound of that. I've always been irritated by those flipcharts cluttering up HMV's doorway, barking "PRE-ORDER COLDPLAY'S X&Y HERE!!!", as if the average punter will think to themselves "Crumbs, there's a thought... What if the record label underestimate demand? The shelves could be stripped bare. I'd better get my order in now, otherwise I might end up having to pay twice the price for a copy off eBay". This new scheme just seems like preserving one of the most annoying features of music-buying that the whole move to downloads was supposed to leave behind.

Next week: My Chemical Romance release their new single as a download for £12.99, bundling with it 11 free album tracks of varying quality.
