Al Gore calls his good friend Lenny Kravitz

Amongst those being called for the Rio leg of Live Earth: Lenny Kravitz, Macy Gray and Pharrell Williams.

It's barely even worth counting the excess air travel that clocks up, isn't it?

Just for once could you try and see the long term picture? To be honest, I couldn't care less about this concert, but I'm getting bored of morons slagging it because the people taking part will have to fly to it!

If we were equally strictly moral about everything in modern life, nothing of this nature would ever get done.

The long term picture? You mean the one where the rise in air travel is the largest source of growth of greenhouse gases in the developed world, so it's a little absurd to try and promote the idea of doing something about the environment by getting a large number of bands, with their entourages, to make pointless air journeys?

What on earth is gained by having Macy Gray fly to Rio? Could a more compelling example not have been set by having a gig where people didn't traipse across the globe to lecture us about the need to reduce emissions?

"Nothing of this nature would ever be done", you say, as if not burning through another chunk of scarce resources to push Lenny Kravtiz's career would be a bad thing.

And, if the idea of an event calling for a great moral sea change in our behaviour shouldn't be judged in moral terms, what is the point of morality?
