MTV Video nominations, for some reason
The announcement of the nominations for this year's MTV video awards prompts not just a yawn from Time, but we're pretty sure we can hear it scratching its crotch as it scoffs at the idea of a TV station which has stopped showing videos determining the "best" videos at a ceremony which has long since forgotten it was meant to be a send-up of this sort of thing.
Amongst the nominations, then:
Best band: Fall Out Boy / Gym Class Heroes / Linkin Park / Maroon 5 / White Stripes
Best new artist: Lily Allen / Gym Class Heroes / Peter Bjorn & John / Carrie Underwood / Amy Winehouse
Female artist of the year: Beyonce / Fergie / Nelly Furtado/ Rhianna / Amy Winehouse
Male artist of the year: Akon / Robin Thicke / TI / Justin Timberlake / Kanye West

It's perhaps, on balance, better that MTV has stopped showing videos these days.

Peter, Bjorn and John being nominated, though. If anyone cared anymore, that would be a seriously good thing.
Their nomination does stand out from a very, very dull list - although with both Allen and, I believe, Winehouse lined up for the show, I suspect they might not want to waste time clearing space on their shelf
The hyperbolic titles are all well and good, but 'Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration'? That list? Hardly on a par with Nick Cave and Kylie, are they? 'Earth-Shattering Collaboration' to me suggests one of those songs where something fantastic and unexpected comes from a meeting of two artists you'd maybe never think of putting together. With the exception of the Beyonce and U2 tracks, that list of 'collaberations' is nothing more earth-shattering than a bunch of artists whose producers have called in a rent-a-rapper to secure a place on the next '100% R&B' compilation. If I recall correctly, Akon's contribution to that Stefani track consisted of little more than howling 'Woooo-ooooo' over and over. Earth-shattering stuff!
Having said that, at least they're not 'Dancing in the Street' by Bowie and Jagger. I still have nightmares.
Now this, on the other hand, is an Earth-Shattering Collaboration.
