The current issue of Mojo has offered a list of the 50 greatest indie records ever, and while it cussedly mixes albums and singles, and is never going to be 'right', it does at least offer up a playlist for a great night at an indie club:

Peng? As you say, a puzzling mix of albums and singles, but if you're going to choose any Stereolab, surely it has to be French Disko.

Posted this at indiemp3 already but...

If we're going to define indie as an attitude rather than a business arrangement, then surely Pulp, Suede and the (Richey-era) Manics deserve a nod. Also missing: Mogwai, Urusei Yatsura, Telstar Ponies, Chesterf!elds, Soup Dragons.

And where exactly does punk stop and post-punk/indie/alternative begin? The Buzzcocks are as crucial as Joy Division in understanding the indie ethos (lovelorn, wry, articulate, self-deprecating, etc etc).

I would direct people to my book about OK Computer for a rather fuller muse on the essence of indieness, but that would be a shameless plug, wouldn't it, oh, what the hell...
