Sony Awards: Freak Zone up for the cup

The Sony Radio Awards is one of the few meaningful awards ceremonies which manages to nominate surprising and deserving entrants most years.

So it's brilliant to see that Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone has been given a consideration for Specialist Music Show, especially in a year when it's had half an hour cut off its time to make room for Huey Fun Loving Criminal's show.

Although that gets a nomination, too, in best music show. Where - oh wonders of irony - he's up against Maconie and Radcliffe's Radcliffe And Maconie show. And then Radcliffe is fighting Maconie for Music Broadcaster Of The Year.

Shaun Keavney and Chris Moyles are both nominated for best breakfast, though: presumably the judges like to sleep in.

These are those nominations, in full, like:

Thank god George Lamb didn't get involved. The absence of substansial nominations for 6Music (aside from the wonderful Adam and Joe and some strange one-offs: HUEY?) doesn't bode well.

After turning on for the end of der Lamb this afternoon I was greeted by Chris Hawkins. His show was partly music from the indie-er end of the Radio 2 playlist and partly inane local radio-level chat. "There's been something in the paper about UFOs. Have you ever seen a UFO? Can you think of a UFO-referencing song? Now we've got a self-declared UFO expert on the line..."

Oh and Radio Scilly is pretty good on account of people actually listening to it, it using innovative funding methods and there being an actual community to serve. The lack of direct BBC competition helps.

Speaking of which...

THE LIVE EVENT COVERAGE AWARD
Summer Sundae Weekender - BBC Audio & Music for 6 Music

See if you can guess which major 6 Music commitment, since the station began in fact, has been dropped this year.
