NME Awards 2010: Next year, sponsored by Kleenex
Let's try this post again with some actual words in it, shall we?
The NME Awards happened out of their box last night, and in a surprise, The Stone Roses won every category.
Alright, nothing that interesting happened. Although, tucked inside the play-it-safe, alt-by-template prizes to Paramore and Muse and Arctic Monkeys and - so help us God - Kasabian, there were a couple of signs of individual thought. Jamie T winning best solo artist (take that, Welch) and The Big Pink picking up track of the year are probably both decisions which would justify the NME claiming to be a voice outside the mainstream.
Pity about the rest of the winners:

The real worry is that the more these awards suggest NME readers love Kasabian, the more the NME will write about them, and the more they're lose readers who actually like music, leaving an even higher proportion of Kasabian fans for next year and... oh, it doesn't bear thinking about.

Kasabian - the Ocean Colour Scene of 2010.
^ but with much more success :(
I think it's worth reflecting on that Best Album Artwork for a moment, noting that it beat an actual painting from Manic Street Preachers and the rather lovely Muse cover....

@electroweb The Muse album which, let's not forget, won an actual 'Best Album Artwork' award for its 'intense graphic work' a few weeks ago, voted for by representatives from Creative Review, Rough Trade, the Quietus and ArtVinyl, so probably people who know good album design when they see it.
But no, apparently it was a load of shit compared to a photo of some sheepish builders who've just been caught in the dressing-up box.
Despite his multiple faults, Dizzee ought to have won Best Solo Artist. Jamie T is another of Welch's ilk, though never as ubiquitous as the latter currently is, so less actively enraging.
"Giving It Back Fan Award
Winner: Lily Allen for her Twitter ticket treasure hunt"
Ah, so the answer to our question from a few weeks back. Apparently Lily "I want my fans disconnected from the internet" Allen is the one "Giving it back". Ok, NME.
Remember when Ooberman done a treasure hunt for their NME award?
Dominoes, isn't that that shitty song from the mobile phone ad? Is that REALLY what passes for an alternative in this day and age?
@Anonymous Aye, and I also remember when Ooberman offered their entire back catalogue for download, for free (through this blog, no less). See, Allen? THAT'S how you 'Give It Back'. They couldn't have done much more for music fans without actually popping round in person to see if they needed anything from the shops.
@Bob That's the one. I'm going to stop by Ladbrokes in my lunch break and put a tenner on the 'Autoglass Repair, Autoglass Replace' jingle for the 2011 award.
