Yo La Tengo: It should be based on who's the hungriest

The fans loved it at first when - after the spinner told them to - Yo La Tengo started to work through a Seinfeld script (The Chinese Restaurant episode, to be precise). For some, the novelty wore off quite quickly. But they did come on and do some music afterwards. And...

Ira Kaplan does do a great Jerry Seinfeld.

Decade Null: 2000 - Yo La Tengo

Let's Save Tony Orlando's House. After 2000, not simply a telethon hosted by Troy McLure, but also a track on Yo La Tengo's And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out. Here, live, in 2008:

Bookmarks: Some stuff to read on the internet: Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo share some of their favourite bands with the New York Times:

MR. KAPLAN You know, it’s funny. Georgia made this list, and it got me thinking about all the people on it. One thing that I was thinking about My Bloody Valentine was that they’re so legendarily difficult; they’re the band that bankrupted Creation Records. But they never took any, as far as I could tell, great pleasure out of — that wasn’t their motivation. They were just listening to the music in their head, trying to make it. It seems like they were doing what made sense to them, and the fact that it didn’t make sense economically or decibelwise, it was almost like: “Oh it doesn’t? I thought it would.”

Downloadable: Yo La Tengo

Good news: Yo La Tengo are releasing a new record very, very soon.

Even better news, to turn us into slavering beasts desperate for the record, they're offering Periodically Double Or Triple as a trial mp3.

Yo La Tengo try softly, softly approach

Yo La Tengo have booked up a series of Hanukkah shows for New York this December, but, rather sweetly, are gently acknowledging that gig tickets might seem a luxury when ATM machines are currently being turned into shredders:

As Joan Rivers asked so poignantly: can we talk? With all the economic turmoil turmoiling about us these days, it's not that easy to suggest that you spend what's left of your money with us. But if you've ever attended these Hanukkah shows before, we hope you'll agree that they are unique evenings of entertainment (and if you haven't, there are lengthy descriptions of the 2005 and 2007 editions archived in the News section at yolatengo.com). We don't take a penny from these shows, and no performer receives anything beyond their expenses. The word benefit is an often abused one, but we promise you, the money you pay is being passed along to charity.
Which brings me to the next point. Over the years, from time to time people have offered unsolicited suggestions about where we could donate the proceeds from individual shows, suggestions we have frequently taken. So let's solicit them this year: If you work for a non-profit organization, don't hesitate to tell us about it. We can't guarantee that we'll select you as one of our recipients, but we will absolutely consider it.

They're polite, everyone benefits; it's a seasonal glow.

Daniel Johnston and his chums

The package tour. Besides the over-sugared NME affairs and 80s specials, you don't get many packages any more. Daniel Johnston is doing his best to revive the concept, though, with a UK and European jaunt featuring short sets from Scout Niblett, Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, James McNew of Yo La Tengo, Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair of Half Japanese. The friends will also provide backing band duties for Daniel during his headline set. You'll want to know the dates, of course:

18th July - berns, stockholm
19th July - sticky fingers, gothenburg
20th July - rockefellar, oslo
23rd July - Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow
24rd July - New Century House, Manchester
25th July - Indigo2, Millennium Dome, Greenwich
26th July - BBC Maida Vale Session - no fee
27th July - Whelans, Dublin
28th July - Whelans, Dublin
