Five years ago today

Kylie Minogue complained that TV talent shows wasn't a 'proper' way to get into music; not like going on a soap opera.

Robbie Williams brought forward his Christmas single because of "public demand" (and to avoid clashing with Gareth Gates).

LBC decided they could do well enough without Simon Bates.

Charlotte Church sacked her manager, but allowed her to stay on as her mother for the time being.

And Vinnie Jones released his Christmas knees-up album. (Copies still available through Amazon, if you're interested.)

Interesting to read the LBC article from 2002 about the station being taken over and revamped ("It is an ambitious aim, and it is probably LBC's last chance"), seeing as the same thing is happening at the moment with the takeover by Global Radio.

Sadly the changes have already lead to the departure of Iain Lee, whose Sunday night show was done away with. It was a great programme, completely barking and probably the only show on the station which didn't rely of phonecalls from taxi-drivers complaining about 'the illegals' or a presenter asking if we remembered Spangles. His podcasts give a good (if swearier) idea of what it was like - www.iainlee.libsyn.com.

I'm not sure what sort of a financial state the station's in at the moment, but it did seem to rely on presenters plugging premium-rate lowest-bid auctions, in between commercial breaks loaded with public information films and adverts for insomnia treatments.
