This fortnight just gone

The last two weeks on No Rock & Roll Fun

The most-read individual posts over the two weeks:

1. Mc Fly naked, after 18 months, finally hits the number one spot
2. R Kelly's sex video
3. Lily Allen slips out her slip
4. Heather Mills, porn and videos
5. Casey Calvert: Cause of death announced
6. Beth Ditto strips for NME
7. 2007 best of lists
8. No Nelly Furtado nude pictures for Playboy
9. RIP Dan Fogelberg
10. RIP Joaquin Tavares

These were amongst the scanty releases:

Happy Mondays - Bummed A 'two disc collector's edition', apparently

Top Of The Pops 1979 Sadly, not actually taped off the tv by a cassette recorder with a built-in microphone

Heroes Oddly, nobody thought to produce a soundtrack option without Mohinder's voiceovers

Tamara Drewe - Posy Simmonds Thomas Hardy crossed with teen fans of boybands and weekend authors

I just commented about hypocrisy on your post about Harvey.

Then I saw this.

You slag off Gordon Smart for running stories about sex/naked pics then your OWN Top 10 stories are:

1. Mc Fly naked, after 18 months, finally hits the number one spot
2. R Kelly's sex video
3. Lily Allen slips out her slip
4. Heather Mills, porn and videos

5. Casey Calvert: Cause of death announced
6. Beth Ditto strips for NME
7. 2007 best of lists
8. No Nelly Furtado nude pictures for Playboy
9. RIP Dan Fogelberg
10. RIP Joaquin Tavares

Pot, kettle and black spring to mind.

It's an interesting point, although it's more a commentary on what people search on Google for rather than what the blog is about.

I have been thinking about junking the Top 10 as it does turn into little more than "people search Google for pictures of naked people" rather than a guide to what the No Rock has been writing about for the last seven days.

But I reject your charge of hypocrisy - I don't criticise Gordon for running stories about sex or even "stories about naked pics" - the point is that he runs non-stories as an excuse to pad his column with pictures of semi-naked women. Now, I've never made any secret of the fact that I like looking at pictures of attractive people in states of undress - I just don't think it's journalism.

The stories in the top ten are about sex and nudity, but they're commentary:

In order:
1. The story is about McFly stripping off to make a pop video, suggesting it's a bit desperate. No photo.
2. The legal judgement that the video filmed in the R Kelly sex case is admissible in evidence. It's a post on an ongoing case featuring one of the biggest stars of R&B. No photo.
3. This was an eyebrow raising at the News of the World's suggestion that Lily Allen "gave passengers a strip show" on the train. No photo.
4. I think you're familiar with the Heather Mills story and why it might have been worth comment. No photo.
5. Beth Ditto's naked front page for NME was one of the most interesting things to happen in indie music this year. There is, on this one, a thumbnail image of the front of the NME, too.
6. Nelly Furtado not doing a porn magazine. Yes, that's some racy content there.

Music is about sex, and you can't write about music without writing about sex.

Googling is about sex, and you can't reflect what people are googling without writing about sex.

I'm not quite sure why that's on a par with printing a picture of Paris Hilton and pretending that it's news.

Thank you for a full response.

What really concerns me now is just how many people are typing 'R Kelly sex video' into Google, when everyone knows how old the girl involved was.
