Gordon in the morning: Dispatches from Milton Keynes

The unelected junta who rule Milton Keynes from the Homes And Communities Agency will be delighted with the new high-profile of the city. World Cup bids, Mark Lawson's thumbs-up (although apparently he manages to sit in traffic jams in the city centre and hasn't noticed that most of the large shops and restaurants are in the heart of the town and not "out-of-town").

And now: an appearance in Gordon Smart's column. Nick Parker and Virginia Wheeler have joined forces to bring a tale of Amy Winehouse's trip to the panto:

Amy went to the show to see pal ANTHONY KAVANAGH - a reality TV star standing in as Prince Charming for regular BEN ADAMS, of boyband A1.

Good lord, can you imagine being Ben Adams' stand-in? It's like being bought on as a substitute for the wheezy boy stood on the sidelines with a note from matron.

Amy turned up relaxed, claims The Sun, and left a trail of disaster in her wake.
A backstage source said: "Anthony brought Amy to impress the cast with his showbiz connections. But it backfired badly."

The source added Amy was "like a demonic child" and made kids in the 1,400-strong audience cry.

So, not all bad, then.

Thames Valley Police are currently burning through our council taxes investigating a possible assault, but no arrests have been made.

What no Rage Against Rage? So I just looked at the Sun page. Yeah. I actually decided I wanted to see Bizarre's position on the irrelevant charts story. I spotted this from Tom Morello "THIS is such a historic moment. A grassroots campaign of non-conformists has overthrown the pop charts at Christmas." This just proves everything I've ever suspected of Rage Against The Machine. Non-conformists??? This is the most conformist thing I've seen all year. He says it's a victory for "cutting-edge music". I don't know about anyone else but I'm about to enter 2009 and not 1993. Worst of all, I suppose, is the word "historic" being used to describe something as utterly trivial as music chart position. I thought RATM were all about bringing political revolution and highlighting the world's problems. No. It's about getting to number one. That's historic. I imagine every person in the world subject to poverty, famine and war thanks you Rage.

If you're travelling North past St Neots over the next few days, it's worth noting there's sometimes an overnight diversion at the Wyboston exit which takes you up the A428 towards Cambridge, then down the A1198 and A14 towards Huntingdon. People have complained of the route adding up to 30 minutes to their journey, so be sure to factor it into your travel plans.

Just thought I'd mention it, since you were talking about slightly cumbersome and unpopular A1 alternatives.
