Happy birthday, NME
I've been reading it since it was not as good as it used to be, and it's remained not as good as it used to be, consistently, since. I've been lucky enough to have had some stuff published in there in the past, which was always a teenage dream. For all its faults, it remains the best weekly pop paper - okay, it would be by default, but you know what I mean.
It still has some great people writing for it; it can still surprise and often delight. However much I might wish for a different NME, I'd never want a world without any NME.
Sixty years getting people to give you money for writing about music. Happy birthday, you magnificent beast.

I have had a total of 3 letters published in the NME, one was asking what had happened to Billy Bragg, one was asking when new material was out from The Frank and Walters and the other was decrying the lack of quality music on mainstream BBC, this followed a rare appearance by The Wedding Present on TOTP. I went from Smash Hits to NME, but favoured sounds until its demise. I held a subscription up until the constant coverage of bands I really hated. I dont think I have even read a copy in over 5 years. That said I visit the website without fail every day and think buying the NME is important growing up as your first pair of DM's.
You should, of course, write more. If not for the NME then for other mags and newspapers.
