They did get Al Capone for tax evasion

Pete Doherty's seeming ability to keep himself out of jail might be about to desert him, as he's pushed the police a little too far this time:

Smoking during his T in the Park set:

Councillor Alan Grant, convener of the Perth and Kinross Council environment committee, said Doherty could face prosecution.

He said: "The point of the legislation is to protect the public's health and I would expect performers not to smoke on stage, though where the stage is open it is a moot point.

"The idea is not to put other people's health at risk and I am afraid in these circumstances Mr Doherty would be doing so."

He might just get away with it, though: from the looks of Scotland On Sunday's report, he gave a cunning false name to police.

Paolo Nutini: A Leon Rosselson for our times

Paolo Nutini is not a happy man. Personally, if we'd managed to get so many glowing column inches despite a fairly slight talent, we'd figure the press has given us more than an even break, but Nutini feels somewhat hard done by, and has decided the best way to express his anger at a certain tabloid is to write a song about it.

You'd have thought he'd have learned by now that isn't his metier - he'd have been better off making an angry clay pot, or doodling on a pad by the telephone. But, no, song it was - titled The Sun Can Kiss My Ass:

They say things that are meant to bring you down
they put you up on your high horse and rock you til you're down
They say I hate the Pope and that I love dope
These things are meant to bring me down but The Sun can kiss my ass

We seem to have missed the coverage of Nutini's alleged marijuana-fuelled anti-Papist behaviour, but it's duly noted; we're more worried by Nutini's poor grasp of the English language, confusing "a pedestal" with a "high horse". Is it even possible for someone to put another person on a high-horse?

And, if he isn't even bovvered, why write a ditty about it?

Ferry nearly sinks Editors

Playing two festivals on two different landmasses nearly did for the Editors: their equipment got stuck between Oxegen and T in the Park:

The band, one of several playing Oxegen prior to their T appearance, revealed their instruments and backline had failed to make it to the ferry to Britain. Drummer Ed Lay said: "The van with all the equipment was waiting to go on the ferry but they started allowing vehicles on in reverse order."

Rather oddly, the Daily Record doesn't bother to reveal what happened in the end, so we're going to assume they went onstage using Twangers (as seen on Rainbow) and drums made from boxes.

Snow Patrol prove they can get themselves arrested

Somewhere between their Live Earth performance and their scheduled slot at T in the Park, Tom Simpson got arrested. The Snow Patrol keyboardist had his collar felt on matters arising from a non-appearance in court at Glasgow.

Luckily, he was released in time for the band to appear at T - I say luckily, obviosuly that's from the perspective of someone who doesn't have to stand in a field watching them.

Amy Winehouse, though, has cancelled, due to "exhaustion", although it's not clear if that's the sort of exhaustion you get when you spend all day in a bar, like the exhaustion that did for her Liverpool date.

Twice in a day: How blessed we are

So, quickly over to BBC Three, where - oh, sweet joy - Razorlight have flown up to Scotland and are doing T in the Park. We imagine they'll be explaining away the private jet that little jaunt involved by saying it was for T in the Park and not for Live Earth, and so wasn't, strictly speaking, hypocritical.

Borrell is wearing the all-white outfit for this one, presumably to help viewers tell the difference between the otherwise indistinguishable sets.

T gets boggier still

The weather continues to bring misery to T in the Park: at the end of the evening yesterday organisers had to close the car park and are trying to encourage people turning up to today to take the bus:

A spokesman for the festival said: "There have been major traffic queues due to the wet weather conditions which has made parking on site extremely difficult.

"As a result this has slowed down traffic into the event and caused tailbacks.

"While we are working as hard as we can to resolve this we would encourage fans coming to the event on Saturday to take a shuttle bus instead of driving to alleviate traffic."

The BBC coverage this year hasn't been quite as luxurious as in recent years - it's not clear if this is down to Mark Thompson's belt-tightening regime, or the strain of also covering Live Earth at the same time. But last night's BBC Three programme didn't offer press red choicey-choicey magic, which left us with little option but to watch the Arctic Monkeys - who, frankly, looked like a band who'd given their all at Glastonbury the other week and were treating this as a wind down - and Lily Allen. Allen does, undeniably, is great on these sorts of occasions - all smiley and welcoming and personable. It's just a pity that she's not very good at singing live. Even her best stuff - Littlest Things, which could be good enough to be a Kate Nash b-side - calls for a beyond her limited range.

T in the Bog

T in the Park has got underway - unfortunately with many ticket holders sat in traffic tailbacks compounded by poor weather and increased security:

Tayside Police also asked motorists to be patient as all the access routes to the festival site were very busy.

The force said there were major delays on the M90 southbound on Friday afternoon, with traffic stretching back from Kinross to Bridge of Earn.

Ch Insp Sandy Bowman said: "In order to alleviate some of the delays we are advising anyone travelling to T in the Park from the north to go via the Tay Road Bridge on the A92, continue on the A91 to Junction 8 and then join the M90 southbound at Junction 7 as signposted.

"I would advise all motorists in the area to exercise extreme caution on the M90 as the tailbacks are lengthy and the traffic is either stationary or very slow moving.

"Please be patient and, if you don't need to be travelling on M90, please avoid the area for now."
