Sounds like Craig Nicholls isn't having a good time of it again

The sad lurch of Craig Nicholls' life takes another sideways, backwards stumble: he's been arrested after fighting with his parents and police. The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

Nicholls was arrested and charged with five offences, including two counts of domestic assault, stalking or intimidation, resisting arrest and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

His parents took out an AVO and he is expected to appear before Sutherland Local Court tomorrow.
All in all, it's a terrible loss for music; but what music has lost obviously doesn't compare with what Craig has lost.

Jet save the seals

In common with most people who have ears, we're not big fans of Jet, but it's pleasing to see them joining forces with The Vines and PETA to try and stop the Canadian seal hunts.

Of course, all they've done is sign a petition, which, frankly, is a working definition of "the least they could do". Still, they've got plenty of coverage for a little bit of writing, which must make it all worthwhile.

Kyla and Sarah's Big Day Out

bsn's answer to Tegan and Sara risk life, limb and anti-capitalist purity to see PJ, the Vines et al...

before we get too far, we'd like to have a whinge. since when did the big day out become so damn commercial? no, really, when? when we first started going to the big day out, it was an indie kid's haven: lovely indie, goth and punk kids everywhere; lots of quality music; freedom to do what one wanted, and just a great, fun day out. this year, it was an excruciatingly commerical event. we didn't go last year because the line up was shite, but if the event was anything like this year's, we're not sorry we missed it. it has gone from indie kid haven to land of the trendies. while we were lining up to get in the gates, there was a group of punky girls behind us, with torn tartan clothing, many body piercings, and political slogans written on their clothing and body in permanent marker. to the left of us, there was a group of avril lavigne-type girls: prissy blonde hair; short tartan skirts from supre; ties, and doc martens. one of the avril lavigne girls turns to her friend, and says, "wow, look at those girls. they've, like, written on themselves! that is SO cool!!" it was hard to decide whether to be amused or horrified. once in the gates, however, it became clear we should be horrified. very horrified. trendies EVERYWHERE. one girl who particularly caught our collective eye was a girl wearing a pair of designer pants; a boob tube, and a pair of those trendy platform flip flop things. also, during augie march, there were a couple of girls standing next to us [AND TALKING REALLY FUCKING LOUDLY] who were dressed from head to toe in roxy. wearing flip flops. like, hello? this isn't the beach or the shopping mall. it's the bloody big day out. you wear comfortable clothes that you're not scared to get dirty and smelly. not designer clothes. pffft.

also, we've never seen such blatant advertising in our lives. seriously, it was disgusting. other than the bands, there was nothing indie about it. it was haven for the trendies and big companies. there was justin timberlake wannabes with water spray things advertising levis, and people dressed up as sperm advertising saturn condoms [although that latter one was somewhat amusing]. and carnival rides. carnival rides at the big day out. feesh...

but, on to the bands... we'll start with augie march, because they were the first band we watched the whole set of. they were on the jjj essential stage, so we had to move around from the main arena to watch them. sarah had never heard anyhing by them before, and was happily converted by their wonderful lovely perfomance. thankfully, they played mostly songs from their debut album, 'sunset studies', which was good for kyla as she STILL hasn't been able to afford to get their new album, 'strange bird'. they played 'sunset studies'; 'the hole in your roof'; 'the good gardener'; another song from 'sunset studies' that kyla couldn't name because she seldom reads the track list, and a few songs from the new album, including a really twangy, foot stomping track that they closed with [we think it was, possibly, called 'strange bird']. and were wonderful, despite many technical difficulties including crackling speakery things, and a really shit sound techie who couldn't balance the sounds correctly. and they were funny. as ever. actually, we were surprised by the large number of people who turned out to watch augie march, as we'd previously believed them to be a band that only kyla had heard of.

the vines were the next band we watched for the whole set. we made a drunk blonde friend during the band on the orange stage before them, millencolin [who were quite shite, might we add]. he came out of the mosh, nearly passed out and fell on us about fifty times, and we had to save him from falling over and getting trampled for most of millencolin. then he disappeared into the mosh. also, during millencolin, sarah nearly got into fights with two guys who were considerably larger than her. the mosh was full of trendies who clearly didn't understand mosh ettiquette, and we were about ready to kill every single one of them. also, there were a bunch of stick figure trendy girls in flip flops who obviously didn't grasp the concept of a mosh. so we let them through, only to watch them try to push their way out about ten minutes later. yes, we are cruel, but damn it was funny.

but back to the vines... craig was wearing a pretty ordinary pair of jeans that were broken at the back and a greenish t-shirt. he wears jeans well, though. his hair was lovely and shiney, but clearly unbrushed, as it stuck up at the back and spent most of the set covering his pretty little face. and he's tiny. we'd never realised this before. mm. but lovely... anyway, about half way through their first song, sarah pointed out that craig had come on stage with a wet patch on his crotch. this we found greatly amusing. his antics are nothing less than weird. he lasted about three songs before he felt the need to smash up a guitar, and then he smashed up a guitar after nearly every song to follow. at some stage, he put a cigarrette in his mouth to light it, then realised he had to sing, thus opening his mouth and dropping the cigarette. he had various objects thrown at him from the crowd, but failed to notice. he nearly ran into the bass player on a number of occasions; fell into the drum kit, and nearly knackered himself when he attempted to do a morrissey and lay singing across the speakers. and then he decided to just lay over the speaker with his arse in the air. but that is what made the performance immensely cool. he's a nutter, and he makes faces when he sings. and when he speaks. and you can't understand what he's saying when he's speaking, just as you can't understand what he's saying when he's singing. and he didn't even look drunk or stoned! just... normal. it was bizarre. but totally cool. they departed playing 'get free', and craig smashed up the drums and the amps before making his way off stage.

pj harvey, then. we caught the last part of the living end so we could get a good spot, and then had to sit through the shite queens of the stone age performance. polly was wearing an interesting combo. kyla thinks it may have been suede, but sarah thinks it may have been corduroy. it was a brown hot pants/vesty thing combo, which was covered with shiney ornamentations and such. she wore a pair of knee lace up boots, and her hair was in ringlets. she was wearing much lipstick, of course, and looked immensely lovely. she is also tiny. we always knew this, but were shocked at exactly how tiny she was. she opened with 'to bring you my love', and played songs from all her albums, but most of them came from 'stories from the city, stories from the sea' and 'the four track demos'. there was a boy that looked like a girl standing next to kyla, and behind sarah was this stupid drunk cow who kept screaming, "peeee-jaaaay! peee-jaaay haaarvey! peee-jaaay rocks!" and hitting us in the head. [every time she hit kyla, she thought she'd hit sarah, and would give sarah a rather rough rub on the head and go, "SORRRYYYYYY!"] she was quite irritating. after pj had finished her set, she stood there for about five minutes screaming, "sheeeeeela-na-gig! play sheela-na-gig! sheeeeela! peee-jaay roooocks!"

sick of being treated like crap by teenies and drunks, sarah and kyla made the wise decision to leave after pj harvey's set, before the foo fighters came on and we got either crushed or into a fight.

cool things collected at the big day included: sarah's authentic 1980s depeche mode badge [it made her day]; the smiths badges; the vines and pj harvey t-shirts; sunburn; much dirt, and a cool chinaman hat, which was lost during millencolin when a drunk moron decided he was going to try and crowd surf when he wasn't in the mosh. moron.
the end.

This, on the other hand, is hard

The Vines beat each other up so badly their managers send them home to bed and rip up their passports.

Jay Leno: A Man who's seen a lot

The most scary thing about the whole Vines kicked off Leno incident is the little quote from the man, reported here:

"They were like loaded at 6 pm."

Jay Leno works in showbusiness. He's interviewed countless dozens of drug addicts, boozers, wifebeaters and auto-erotic self-flagellators. And he's tutting over a rock band being drunk in the evening? Jesus, lets hope he hasn't got Winona Ryder booked this side of the Betty Ford clinic.

(Apparently Craig Nicholls and chums had a massive fight and hit each other a bit and Leno had them escorted from the studio).

The Manbreasts exposed

Now, over to Canada where Claire Vernon is waiting to see Craig from the Vines unleash the rumoured he-bazookas:

The Music opened, and i just want to ask...

how come no one told me they were that good??? they played a 45 minute set and they were really really good. phonic/sonic i guess is the work for them. they buzzed around in my brain the way radiohead does and they rocked out at the same time. good times. singer has a really strong voice. very impressed. they definitely need work and a single though.

so the vines came on and played and this is where i got stuck in the middle of the crowd in front of mr craiggy. i haven't been in a "mosh" crowd in a really really long time and it was both exhilirating and a little like "fuck i'm too old for this" at the same time. it was nice to have the random violence and no control over where you put your feet while you just immerse yourself in music that you really like while you stare at a really pretty boy with a guitar and be all sweaty and squished. i felt like my eyes were as wide as dinner plates. but then some fucking crowd surfer (and didn't that die with vitalogy??) landed on my head and cracked every bone in my neck and i was in massive amounts of pain so i stayed for a few more songs and then left to watch the rest at the sides. but on to the music.

they played the first three songs right in the order of the album, then miss jackson (GORGEOUS) and mary jane, hmm what else, basically the rest of the album.

my highlight was homesick. then for the encore they did country yard and 1969 then cause craig was a weirdo he threw his mic and broke it and it didn't work even after the techies fixed it and that *pissed him off* and he fucking trashed the stage like i've never seen. in between or during songs he would just randomly throw himself on the floor. wierd. he was pretty nice although none of us understood what he had to say to us.

oh and on the man-tits, si, i saw nothing for the first part cause he was clothed and he was wearing black which is slimming. but for the encore he came back with no shirt. and what i have to say is this:

there is the beginnings of man tits. nothing you could really wrap your hand around. not even anything that could fill a double a cup. but if he keeps his lifestyle up, definite man tits coming. also, gut. definite gut. not appealing.
this man is best with a shirt on.

What the pop papers say: Part one

"I think she did a pretty good job. She researched it well" admits Louis Walsh, talking about Kathy Foley's book on his life. So, does this mean that the story lifted from it for the current Private Eye - that, during a bout of pout from the Westlife boys, he screamed "I'll show you your fucking fans", marching them out to a carpark and showing them the boot of his partner's car, full of copies of their CDs - is true, and that Westlife's bemusing run of number ones has been helped by Louis' enthusiastic purchase of their stuff?...

Moby pops up in Q's Cash For Questions segment - asked who the most unlikely people to try and licence one of his tracks are, he says "apparently the pro-fox hunting lobby tried... I don't think they would have been so keen to do that if they'd known I was an animal rights activist and a vegan." Really? Only that car manufacturer didn't mind that you were meant to be a serious environmentalist, did they? There's claims on Groupie Central that the little bald fella is "sexually transmitted disease on legs", which Moby reckons is down to a friend he'd fallen out with - "I still haven't figured out why he was so angry." Maybe you gave him the clap? Best of all, though, Moby - a man who posted a notice on his website denying he was in any way a pervert because he'd been talking on TV about porn the night before - preambled that when Badly Drawn Boy had been interviewed by Q "Damon Gough took himself so seriously, I was stunned..."

Craig Nicholls believes England can win the Ashes. Thats okay, Craig, there's some English cricketers who believe that The Vines will have a number one single...

Q has some exclusive pages from Kurt Cobain's journals. Is there anywhere that doesn't? Even Country Life has got a spread (two pages of him doodling a woman with a perm while on the telephone, a letter to the milkman asking for "three strawberry yoghurts and a pint of gold top" - never sent, we can only speculate why and a fourteen page review of a Mudhoney album)...

David Quantick and Lemmy team up to investigate how rock and roll Busted are. This is a little bit like sending Benjamin Franklin and Ernie Wise to examine the intellectual rigour of Piers Morgan's Daily Mirror, but those are the days we're living in. Busted offer their credentials - they've thrown a TV out a window. Frankly, these days that's not rock and roll at all - it's somewhat music hall. Back in the 60's, TVs represented hugely expensive items and the pinacle of technological achievement, and destroying one was quite a statement to make. In 2002, it's the equivalent of Led Zep having screwed up a copy of Titbits, or perhaps having pencilled moustaches on the pictures in the West Sussex Gazette...

It takes two thirds of a page to explain how the Q reviews "work", you know, which suggests the readership who they hadn't made up ("overstated") can't be the sharpest, although extra points for comparing Robbie William's Escapology to George Michael's Listen Without Prejudice - Volume 1. So, duff with pretentions; the album that people buy and shudder 'he's had his chance', then...

It's the end of the year, and so the first Best Albums of 2002 has appeared. Amongst q's choices are Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Idlewild, Electric Soft Parade and Pete Yorn...

Plus, it's poll time. Ian McCulloch pops up to claim a Long Time Dead Award - "I'd love to meet myself" - and Dave Gahan collects something similar for Depeche Mode, offering "we really need people like Casey Spooner in the music business" - proof, if it be needed, that heroin really does fuck you up beyond repair. Best act are Radiohead ('act' is always a funny term, suggesting they've gone head to head with Lenny Henry and Archie's Educated Chickens) and Best Album is, predictably, A Rush of Blood To The Head. Coldplay's Chris Martin talks porn - "I don't like pornography. It's not a moral objection but I don't... it's the blokes. I don't like the idea of watching men having sex." Chris Martin shies away from the paranoid bedwetting virgin tag, but he's a grown man who's never heard of Lesbian Spank Inferno...

Pink wins a prize for best video. For Get The Party Started. Which is giving the right person the wrong award, and then giving it for the wrong song anyway. "I'm glad I'm your favourite queer" she says, by video link "- we can't think what else Q stands for." I now don't feel so bad I never worked out it was a pun on Cue, which they didn't want to use in case people thought it was a snooker magazine...

PInk is also on the front of The Face. And all over the insides. Now, this is, of course, good, because it means there's lots of Pink. But it's also a bit of a pity - The Face should have been the herald of New Pink, running the "it's not just another R&B singer" stuff at least last spring, rather than clattering to catch up in the winter. Wanna know why we love her? Because when she first signed, she burned through her advance, and you know what she did? She got a job in a petrol station. LA Reid's son saw her, told his dad, and his dad went down and bawled at her. She said "Pay me what I get in my pay cheque, or I'm not quitting." Do you *really* need us to prove any more why Alecia Moore isn't just another J-Lo? Can you imagine Samantha Mumba, say, throwing a strop over not being allowed to work in a BP Select?.

Sheryl Garret's piece on Pink is good, but fundamentally flawed - she misses the vital difference between yer Pinks and your Gareths, your Dannis, your -insert name of hundred other pop stars here- "Pink always knew she'd be famous" she starts, but that's not quite right. As Garret says, when she was at school, she'd tell teachers she'd get them concert tickets and so on. Pink didn't want to be famous, she wanted to be a rock star. She didn't want to be on magazine covers, she wanted to be on Rolling Stone. She didn't want to be famous at any price - she wanted to be famous for singing...

Pink's in the nme, too. Or rather, she should be. We don't know, as the free covermount CD seems to have fucked up the distribution and it wasn't in the shop when we went this morning - kind of shooting yourself in the foot if you want to put on readers, isn't it? So, we'll pick this up when the paper arrives...
