Iggy Pop applies for work

Iggy Pop wanted to work with Josh Homme, so he, erm, sent him stuff:

"I was looking to make high-quality, non-band solo work, where you really put both feet into it," he said. "I’d been skirting around it: doing an album in French, or a soundtrack, or a reunion band album. I wanted to find the best and he’s the best. I sent him a dossier on me by FedEx: written form, no email. I sent him three essays I’d written on my sex life about specific people. I also sent him an interview I did with an eminent critic here in New York about his concerns about my career."
I'm not Homme's biggest fan, but even I recognise he probably wouldn't have needed an Iggy Pop primer to decide if he wanted to work with him. Homme would be unlikely to have got a note about working with Iggy Pop and needed to fire up Wikipedia.

Maybe that's wasn't what Pop was going for. Maybe he thought Homme needed persuasion and would have been on the phone screaming "okay, no more details about what you put into whose butthole. I'll work with you, just stop sending the stuff..."

Josh Homme starts a fight over a bad name

Josh Homme has launched a lawsuit to try and stop the members of a band he no longer wishes to be in trading under that band's name.

NME.com explains:

Homme was the original guitarist in Kyuss until their split in 1995, but did not take part in the band's reunion tour last year. Garcia had previously claimed that he and Bjork were planning on making another studio album under the Kyuss Lives! moniker, but Antiquiet now reports that they face legal action from Home and Reeder.
It's not entirely clear why Homme is making such a fuss - presumably any fan of Kyuss would know that they're a band with a different line-up; anyone who isn't a fan is, frankly, unlikely to give a hoot in either direction.

Them Crooked Vultures: No pictures, please

It's something of a forlorn hope on the part of Promowest that they can turn back the tide of technology.

People going to see Them Crooked Vultures (John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and a desperate hope that people don't see the words 'supergroup' as a dire warning) are being told to leave their cameras at home:

NO CAMERA’S ALLOWED DURING THIS PERFORMANCE, INCLUDING CELL PHONES. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT TAKING PICTURES YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DELETE THEM. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT A SECOND TIME, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DELETE THEM AND ESCORTED OUT OF THE BUILDING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

Back in the 1980s, sure, you could spot someone with a camera and bully them. But when everyone at the gig will have a phone with a camera built in, how is this even going to work?

Homme-ophobia: Josh Homme defends 'faggot' as term of abuse

Oh, dear. Josh Homme's theatrical rant at a kid throwing stuff at hiim hasn't gone down too well; now, Josh has written an open letter to try and explain why calling someone a 'faggot' as a term of abuse isn't homophobic:

“Some journalists & citizens on the internet & are wondering: Q? Am I a homophobe because I included a slang for gay in with other "acceptable" curse words during a verbal lashing I gave a young concertgoer, after being hit by his shoe, during a show the other day? A= Nope.

You'll note, of course, that Homme has used the Morrissey gambit - shifting what he's been caught doing (here, throwing round homophobic abuse) into a totally different accusation that he's probably innocent of (actively being a homophobe. We say you're throwing around language which can cause offence; you deny being a Nazi.

Still, at least Josh is too sensible to try the "some of my best friends are gay" gambit, isn't he?

He isn't:
“My gay family & friends, as well as myself, KNOW I am not a homophobe.

Josh decides to go a step further, and finally close down that nature/nurture debate once and for all:
For years now I've known gay is not a choice; one's skin color doesn't determine one's intelligence level; & red hair doesn't mean you're someone's stepchild."

If you're trying to build bridges with a gay audience, you might not want to effectively say "it's not like you can help it, is it?" And, if being gay was a choice, would that automatically make it wrong, Josh? Are you implying that gay sex is only okay because you can't help yourself?

We'll answer our own question: No, he isn't. He's just blundering about trying to justify the unjustifiable and blurting out things he assumes may be helpful.

Then he turns to attack - the fault, it seems, is with us:
“You see, it's not the words, it's their intent. I never said, nor suggested, that being gay is wrong, but apparently, based on your outrage to my flu-infused rant, you do!

So, if you're not suggesting that there's something wrong with being gay, why would you use a derogatory term for homosexuals to abuse the kid who threw a shoe at you? You were trying to belittle the bloke; you thought the worst thing you could do was suggest he was gay. Appealing for us to consider the intent makes it worse, not better.

And for a songwriter to suggest that words themselves have no power is just absurd. It's like a man who shoots guns for a living suggesting that his bullets don't kill, it's all down to the angle of the wind.

But, still, kudos for Homme for launching into the most ill-considered attempt to turn an argument round so far this year: "if you object to me calling someone a faggot, that makes YOU the homophobe!"
I also told that young whipper snapper I'd have anal sex with him... how can I possibly reconcile these opposing viewpoints?”

Yes... yes, you did threaten to use rape as a punishment; not - as you're implying here - that you offered to have loving sex with the kid. And it's not entirely difficult to reconcile someone who will use "faggot" as an insult with someone who feels that using forced anal sex is a way to humiliate another person. Perhaps if he'd not spent time trying to solve the 'why do some people have gay sex' question he might have had some time to spend understanding that rape is a weapon, and has nothing to do with sexual attraction. It's telling that Homme spent all his efforts trying to explain away the homophobia, and didn't even mention the accusations that arose from threatening sexual violence.

Just to mop up his confused defence, Homme then, naturally, had a tilt at "political correctness", the right wing's meaningless Aunt Sally:
In his letter, which originally appeared on the bands website, Homme says that he never has been nor does he “intend to be politically correct.”

“That's your cross to bear. To me, that PC world would suck more shit than the porta-potty truck at Glastonbury."

Yeah. Imagine a world where you could threaten anal rape and couldn't get away with it. How terrible would that world be, eh?

Josh Homme is getting upset

The peaceful nature of the Norwegian Wood festival was shattered when Josh Homme got a little annoyed at someone throwing something at the stage:

"Do me one favor, though. Don't throw any shit at me. You throw something at me, I'm not so sick that I can't go down there and beat the fucking shit out of you, you know what I'm saying?! I may have a fucking 102 temperature and been puking for three days, but I'll still butt-fuck you in front of all your friends."

We're at a loss to understand why Homme's suddenly decided that sex with a celebrity is a bad thing, but it's handy to know that if you fancy a spot of anal with Joshie, all you need to do is lob something at him while he's singing.

Seriously, though: someone's thrown something at you and think that threatening to rape them is a justifiable response? There's an interesting lack of proportion.

But Josh hadn't finished:
Hey, you, right there — hey, you, with the fucking hat on! Hey, pussy! Turn around, you fucking pussy with the black hair! Turn the fuck around, you chickenshit fucking f****t! Hey, you — you fucking pussy motherfucker! I will fuck you up! C'mon up here! C'mon up here, you fucking little f****t! You know what?! Get your fucking ass up here! You're so fucking stupid you'll come up here. Lift him up so that I can kick him in the fucking face. [Throws something at the alleged 'shit-thrower'] Invisible fucking cunt. Go back to your mom's house, you 12-year-old dickless fucking turd! And his friends, you wanna throw something too or are you all cool? You're all good? You know this dickless fucking turd has no friends anyway, man. I came here for the rest of you — not for this asshole."

We've left the asterisks from Blabbermouth's report in - we usually don't, but we just thought it funny that they judged their readers to be quite happy to see motherfuckers and cunts and references to anal rape in a report, but would be upset to read the word faggot.

Interscope Records move Josh Homme away from Jimmy Iovine for the staff Christmas lunch

Josh Homme has a somewhat low opinion of his record label, it turns out:

"Fuck the labels, man, they suck. The last thing they're stripping down is their own expense accounts and shit. I mean, (President) Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records takes a private jet or rides first class to tell a band they don't get tour support...I'm not gonna be quiet because the American label, not Canada, not Europe, but our American label's fucking us like crazy, so fuck them...I'm not even bitter, people say labels are evil, no. They're just lame."

"They can't do anything to me. That's the difference...they can't stop me from being me and from playing, but they can lose their jobs and have to fucking work at Shakey's pizza like they should've all along."

"I have a retarded record company. They're all locked in their hysteria of a business that they don't understand, you know. Playing it safe and being panicked have no business in music."

He also added that they've been skimping on office supplies, buying off-brand sticky notes that don't actually fucking stick to any fucking thing and cheap biros that burst in your fucking pockets.

Queens of the Stone Age push cartoon guy

You might think the Queens of the Stone Age are cartoony enough without the need to make an animated feature, but they're pushing ahead with an extended cartoon based on their lightbulb character. The one with the imaginative name Bulby.

The most interesting aspect of all this is Liam Lynch is involved. Yes, Liam Lynch. What did that Whatever song ages and ages ago, having spent time hanging out at Liverpool's LIPA with Paul McCartney.

Let's hope that, you know, there are no other anthropomorphised lightbulbs who might be upset by the idea...

Josh Homme notes reality tv star is not musician

The only-mildly-diverting war of words between Josh Homme and Sharon Osbourne has burst into something approaching life again. Homme has elected to not get syphilis or die, as requested by Osbourne:

"I don't know what she is or what she's done. Has she ever made any music? No. I don't know why her name is Sharon. She ain't sharin' anything."

To be fair, Mr. Homme, you don't appear to Josh overmuch. Who knew that characters didn't tend to reflect words that sound a little like your name.

Presumably Sharon will return in about a week and a half with an equally witty comeback.

Josh Homme doesn't much like Sharon Osbourne

Ozzfest wouldn't be Ozzfest without a disgruntled rock god falling out with Sharon Osbourne, and to mark the 2007 free version of the festival, Josh Homme is doing the falling:

"I won't be playing Ozzfest again - they treat the bands like shit.

"This year you get to play for free under the guise of, 'We're doing it for the fans!' But it's really for the people who fan Sharon and Ozzy with palm fronds at their house."

That's totally unfair. They've not just got one house, have they?

Sharon, of course, has responded with a dignified silence. Oh, alright, she hasn't:
"I hope he gets syphilis and dies. I hope his dick fuckin' falls off so his mother can eat it."

We can't imagine how ITV haven't brought her back for cosy teatime chat.
