All she's asking for is a little respect

Aretha Franklin is reportedly unhappy with Beyonce. Beyo introduced Tina Turner at The Grammys as "the Queen of Soul". Reet was not happy:

"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce."

Aretha, don't confuse ignorance and a lack of history with a deliberate snub.

A mother's gift, the sweetest smile

Amy Winehouse's Mum has told GMTV that Amy's coming back:

"Amy's coming back, she's definitely on the road back."

Although, of course, that's not a medical opinion.

Janis Winehouse was pleased Amy didn't go to the Grammys:
"I think it would have been too much for her because all of the travelling and flying there," she said.

"I mean seeing what the Grammys were like, I thought if Amy were there, she'd be a little girl lost in it."

Yes, because when you're used to rehab, prisons, crackdens and The Hawley Arms, being in a nice hotel surrounded by businessmen would have you all at sixes and sevens, wouldn't it?

Cole fumes at coke-head

Not that she's bitter or anything like that, but Natalie Cole is boiling mad that Amy Winehouse won some Grammys:

“I don’t think she deserved it,” previous Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole said. “I think she needs to get her life together first, and then get the awards later."

It's not clear if Cole has a fully-fledged guide to acceptable behaviour she'd like to see the Grammy Academy introduce for shortlisted artists, or if it's merely Cole doesn't want crack-smokers to be given an award. Or, perhaps, she only wants 'good behaviour' to be a voting factor in categories she might stand a chance of winning if she ever makes a decent record again.

Perhaps someone should take her aside and explain the Grammys are for performance (supposedly) and sales (more honestly), while it's up to the church and courts to deal with character and morality.

Grammys: Fewer watch, again

The quickest tot-ups of ratings for the Grammys last night make grim reading for CBS, with 12% of last year's viewers going missing, and 18% of the 18-49 year old viewers not turning up. It's almost as if the tantalising prospect of an English crackhead singer about not going to get the treatment she's currently having wasn't such a draw after all.

Darkness at 3AM: The Grammys gone toxic

3AM elects to use its firepower on the Grammys today, although, unfortunately, nothing much had happened by 3AM UK time.

Whitney Houston said that Leona Lewis was a "baby me", which excited Lewis:

Leona squealed: "I can't believe Whitney knows who I am."

To be honest, we can't believe that Whitney still knows who Whitney Houston is these days.

The team attempt to uncover diva-ish behaviour backstage, but the best they can come up with is Beyonce asking organisers to make sure her toilet is clean.

Oddly, though, there's a piece on the Mirror site about the BAFTAs, with a byline from one of the 3AM Girls and a chum, but it's not branded as 3AM. They, too, feel that someone other than a person they like winning a prize is a snub, but at least they're more generous to Marion Cotillard, who is upgraded from "unknown" to "little-known". We're interpreting that as someone having had the good grace to check IMDB before filing the report.

Winehouse grabs the Grammys

That'd be quite a successful night for Amy Winehouse then - not so much that she won five Grammys, but more that she turned in two performances for prime-time US TV without screwing up.

Watching the performances, though (they're on the DailyMotion) there is a rather nagging question: where did that audience come from? Who were they? Did they have to pay $300 a head to be there?

Winehouse took five of the awards she'd been nominated for, but didn't get album of the year. Herbie Hancock did, to an audible intake of breath round the world. A jazz album? Surely some mistake?

USA Today suggests that the prize for Hancock might have been an attempt to tick Winehouse off. A little:

Hancock's win may have been a case of the Recording Academy's older voters picking a venerated veteran over a troubled newcomer and a brash hip-hop star [Kanye West].

Yeah, that'd be it - "you can have five prizes, and an expensive high-profile satellite linkup, young Winehouse, but there's no album of the year for you, that'll show you."

Anyway, isn't it a bit spiteful of the paper to assume that Hancock got the prize because the academy was choosing to not give the thing to someone else? Couldn't it be they gave Herbie Hancock the prize because, you know, they liked his record?

USA Today quotes Entertainment Weekly's Chris Willman to bolster its case:
"Evidently, the most conservative voters — and there are a lot of them — got too distracted by her image problems to see that she created a classic."

Aha. Only she did win five prizes, didn't she, Chris?
"Who knew the voters would be this brave?" Willman says. "(The Recording Academy) makes a big deal out of social responsibility, particularly in regard to their anti-drug programs. I figured they'd be too scared to reward someone who looked to all the world like an unwilling candidate for one of those programs — since voting closed before she went into rehab. But with these wins, they said art comes first, which is as it should be."

Except, erm, for the album category, then.

Thank god they got Amy onboard, though, otherwise the event would have been hanging on Alicia Keys playing piano with a back projection of an out of proportion Frank Sinatra and someone winning a competition to have her violin drowned out by the Foo Fighters.

There's an enormous number of live Grammy Blogs slewing about the internet this year - proving that quantity and quality aren't actually the same thing. Which could be scrawled across the tickets for the Grammy supper. There are, however, some very good ones - Stereogum's, for example.

And who'd have thought that Madonna would win something in 2007? Some sort of made-up best DVD of a tour prize or something, but, hey, she's still got it. Just. Clinging on with the claws.

Almost unmentioned, so we'll mention them: The White Stripes managed two awards; and The Chemical Brothers picked up a prize, too.

There is, however, a warning from history for Amy Winehouse. The last time a newcomer did so well at the Grammys, it was Christopher Cross. Indeed, he did a bit better, winning all his categories. It wasn't the start of an especially glittering career.

Timbaland isn't a People people

At part of the slushing celebrating the Grammys, People magazine has sponsored a party for people, with Timbaland as the main draw.

It all went a little sour - alright, a lot sour - when one of his enormous entourage wasn't allowed in. Mr Land shared his frustration with the audience, honking off from the stage:

"Next time I have one of my homeboys in line, let that (expletive) in!" Timbaland shouted as the event winded down after 2 a.m. Saturday, adding that he was a "peoples person."

"I don't like to see my people turned around for some (expletive) magazine ... (expletive) y'all!"

Timbaland is such an old grump, the person who tried to smooth things over by telling journalists that the boss wasn't angry with the sponsors, just some organisational glitches, only did so off the record. When you clean-up crew is afraid of you, you need some serious time out.

It's not just Amy having problems with deciding if she should go

As I Lay Dying have, as you'll be aware, been invited to the Grammys. They've been nominated for "best metal performance" and were quite excited. At first. Then Tim Lambesis started to think about the deal, at first in a "who are these guys to dictate taste" way, and then with slightly more serious worries. He's written about them online, as has guitarist Nick Hipa.

Hipa has decided he's going to go, and come to terms with what the Grammys are:

I don't think its right to demonize the Grammy society. They're not telling us what is and isn't good music, I think they're casting votes on who is doing what they do well... or maybe standing out the most... Now obviously they all don't know much about metal because I can't think of a single awesome thing KING DIAMOND or SLAYER did THIS year.

Tim, though, has more worries than just the question of who makes up the jury:
So, a few weeks go by with me battling this question in my head when I find out that as a nominated 'guest of honor,' I am not able to have even my wife come with me unless I pay $600 for her seat. I know that someone has to help pay for the ceremony, but even a nominated artist trying to bring his better half!? This is when I first started thinking the Grammys might not be for me. Later, I also learn that our label, management and parents can't go unless they pay $300 for seats that are nowhere near where we sit. Basically, all the people that deserve to enjoy this 'special' moment along with the band are unable to do so. Our record label has always been the one at the forefront of great business and marketing decisions that help bring the band to a new level of notoriety. Likewise, our managers have helped to steer us in the right direction ever since we started working with them a few years back. Then there's our lawyer, booking agent, and countless others I could name that have played significant roles in getting us to this point. And, going to the very beginning, my parents deserve so much credit for helping me pursue my dream when no one else could see it. Now, not only is some out of touch elite committee telling us what they think good music should be, but then they try to make the artists they nominate pay a ridiculous amount for the event that we can't even enjoy with all the people that really made this possible.

Now, this payday off artists is quite fascinating. Six nominees in 109 categories, even if you assume that, say, each nominee is up for three prizes, that gives a rough-and-ready potential number of 'honoured guests' of about 200... although, of course, most prizes have more than one name attached to them - but let's say that, averaging out the quartets, sextets, orchestras, producers and engineers that comes to, shall we say, six hundred people up for prizes in total? And if they each want to bring a spouse, partner, sexual intimate or stalker, that's over a third of a million dollars potentially to be made there. Before the three hundred quid a head extra guests.

Now, AILD's Nick thinks this might not be quite as outrageous as it seems:
In trying to figure out WHY they would charge us to bring people, I came up with a plausible explanation: I started thinking it would be flat-out wrong if they charged any nominee to go to the ceremony. And if they didn't charge any nominee's supporters (family, friends, managers, agents, etc.) then how would they be able to pay for the ceremony itself? The production, the venues, the performances, and the presenters, that's got to be a lot of money. If everyone I wanted to get in got in for free, and so did everyone else who got nominated, then who pays for it? It is this thinking that made me give up on being bitter about them charging us.

Hmm. Well, you might think, the large sum of cash being pocketed for the television rights might cover the cost of hiring a venue and providing some food?

And then there's a large list of sponors who are pumping money into the awards - People, GM, Delta, USA Today, Verizon, Westwood One, Hilton, Nokia, Delta. Couldn't their payments go towards paying the costs of the event?

Membership of the Academy, by the way, costs about $100 - couldn't that huge slush fund be dipped into to allow people to take their Mums to the awards?

And even if the event was going to have to be paid for out of attendees' pockets, three hundred dollars a head? You could have a pretty good time for three hundred dollars a head, don't you think?.

But making it even more galling that friends and family of the Grammy nominees are looked to for a quick payday is if you remember the point of the awards, as explained by Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow when he was trying to persuade the writer's guild to not force the event off the air:
This year, more than ever, Grammy Week and the milestone of a 50th Grammy Awards, along with the 50th Anniversary of the founding of The Recording Academy, are a centerpiece and beacon of hope, optimism, and represent literally multi-millions of dollars in sales, promotion, and marketing.

The event is a marketing tool for the music industry - and, effectively, they've found a way of charging the people without whom there would be no commercial to take part in the advertising.

If anyone should be paying the costs of the people who turn up - creating the atmosphere at the Grammys (such as it is) and giving the sponsors something to sponsor, and the audience something to watch, shouldn't it be coming out of the marketing coffers of the RIAA?

America "changes mind"; Amy decides not to go after all

It's surely quite unusual for the US to reverse a high-profile visa decision, but it's done so in the case of Amy Winehouse - perhaps the Home Office offered a two-for-one deal with the Abu Hamza? Maybe the US authorities discovered a fact about Winehouse that had somehow been forgotten at the original visa application? Or perhaps, simply, there's two systems of law operating - one for most of us; another for the super-rich in the entertainment industry who fund political careers.

Still, the change of heart has come too late - Amy's still intending to do the Grammys by satellite. Presumably because if she left now, she'd be getting in with very little time to rehearse.

"I'd love to be with you, but, as you can see, I've got bugs crawling under my skin"

Amy Winehouse might not get to be physically at the Grammys, but she will be part of the show, say organisers:

Grammy producers said, however, that they planned for Ms. Winehouse, who had recently entered a rehabilitation clinic, to appear, probably via satellite, during the program, which will be televised live from the Staples Center here at 8 p.m. Eastern time on CBS.

“You will see Amy Winehouse on the Grammys,” said Ken Ehrlich, the longtime producer of the show. “I’m very happy.”

Failing that, it's going to be Britney via webcam.

They said no, no, no

Regardless of it she's well enough or not, Amy Winehouse won't be at the Grammys: America has turned down her visa application.

Mark Ronson is going to be bored shitless at the awards, then.

Mark Ronson has apparently never seen a Grammys ceremony

Mark Ronson - along with half the journalists in America - is hoping that Amy Winehouse does go the Grammys next week because:

"It'll be boring without her."

Goodness, Mark, do you think? A seventeen hour procession of prizes for the like of best album producer (religious songs in orginal German) might be a little dull?

We're not sure a three minute performance from someone who, if she is well enough to do it, has had the swiftest return to health since Ernest Saunders came out of jail, is necessarily going to swing the difference between a dull night out and a glittering occasion, but we're really not the experts.

Winehouse: Get well sooner

We're delighted that Universal were keen to ensure that Amy Winehouse is given the time to get better*. It's nice to see a caring attitude from an employer.

* - Although, obviously, not if it would mean missing the appointment for a US Visa. After all, getting over addiction is hardly as important as the Grammys, is it? Being drug free won't help with the first quarter sales figures, will it?

It's not strictly crossing a picket line if you fly over

John Legend has come up with a plan for pleasing record company bosses and sticking to the letter of the Screenwriter's Guild request: he's going to play his Grammy gig in a plane:

Details are still being worked out, a Grammy spokesperson tells Billboard.biz, but Legend will perform a 30-minute set aboard a Delta Air Lines, Grammy-branded Boeing 757. The flight will leave New York on Feb. 7 en route to Los Angeles.

Not only is Legend managing to say 'screw you' to the Unions, he's also found a way to make his tiresome plugging of an industry back-slapping as environmentally disastrous as you can get without actually burning a whale in a leaky nuclear submarine. Let's hope there's some Greenpeace campaigners entering that sweepstakes...

Beyonce and Grohl to break writer's strike

Although the striking Hollywood writers have appealed to everyone to stay away from the Grammys, the Recording Academy have gleefully issued "statements of support". First up, comes Matthews Knowles:

"The work of The Recording Academy is vital to the music industry, and we have every intention of being with the entire music community to celebrate the GRAMMYs' 50th birthday in February. Beyoncé, as well as my other artists Solange and Trinitee 5:7, have been asked to participate and will do so. We have an incredible Beyoncé performance that will be announced soon. We wish the GRAMMYs the best."

Actually, it's the 50th Grammys, which if our calculations are correct, would make it the 49th Birthday. Unless Beyonce is putting off appearing until next year.

Meanwhile, Dave Grohl is happy to put his 'good bloke' status in the balance by turning up:
"We're participating in 'My GRAMMY Moment' because it creates opportunities. Opportunities to write, compose, play and study music — skills that absolutely need to be passed on to generations to come. And thanks to 'My GRAMMY Moment,' a musician from that next generation is going to get the chance to audition on YouTube to play with us at the GRAMMYs as part of our orchestra."

... and the message that it's okay to cross picket lines will be spread as wide as possible.

Grammys in danger of black out

The organisers of the Grammys are getting a bit jumpy at the prospect of their 50th glittering event being run aground by the Hollywood writer's strike. The Writers Guild of America is lobbying artists to not show up for the event; the Recording Academy is hoping it can keep the ship afloat.

They've got some support: The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) have issued a heartfelt plea to writers to let the Grammys flow:

"AFM and AFTRA are encouraged by today's news that the Writers Guild of America has signed an interim agreement with the NAACP that will allow The 39th NAACP Image Awards to be telecast as scheduled," reads the statement. "John Cossette Productions, the producer of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards telecast, has made a written offer to the WGA to sign a similar interim agreement to allow the Grammy Awards to be telecast as planned on February 10.

Because, of course, the music industry's annual back-slap is on a par with an event run by, and for, a civil rights organisation. We can see the same principle should apply.
In light of the news that the producer of the Grammy Awards has made a firm offer to the WGA, AFM and AFTRA strongly urge all of our members to support the important work of the Recording Academy by participating in the Grammy events.

It's not just an awards ceremony. Oh, no. It's important work. Apparently, between the best Polka album and the best spoken-word album not featuring Larry King categories, they're going to really get cracking on finding a cure for cancer.

Not quite getting the idea of how a strike works, Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow has suggested writers should get involved for their own benefit:
Portnow pointed out that reaching an agreement to allow the show to go on "would both allow the talented writers for the show to be compensated fairly for their valuable services and allow us to demonstrate support for the creative community of writers in a tangible and meaningful way."

If only Thatcher had tried that with the miners - "come and dig some coal for the electricity industry, Mr Scargill, which will allow you to earn some money and allow us to show support for your withdrawal of labour."

Perhaps we're being unfair - maybe Portnow has plans for some sort of musical salute to striking writers. Possibly Prince and Beyonce dancing on a giant typewriter keyboard.

Wonderfully, Portnow attempts to use the RIAA's pursual of file-sharers to show that everyone's in this one together:
He made the argument that the music industry has been fighting to obtain fair compensation for artists' digital music, and thus supports the WGA in its fight to obtain similar results for its own members.

Let's not mention that many of the record labels are part of the same companies which are attempting to bilk the writers in the first place ("Universal are on your side... well, apart from the movie and television divisions...") and instead wonder exactly how 'companies trying to struggle cash from consumers for digital music' are in the same battle as 'writers trying to get their cut from the cash companies are already taking from consumers of digital video'. Besides sharing some of the same words.

Portnow concludes by arguing on behalf not just of children, or Americans, but the whole world:
Grammy Week represents the most significant worldwide music event of the year. And we are in a different industry than the motion picture and television business; I am quite certain that most are aware of the extremely difficult and challenging conditions facing our industry's creators and companies, unparalleled in our history. This year, more than ever, Grammy Week and the milestone of a 50th Grammy Awards, along with the 50th Anniversary of the founding of The Recording Academy, are a centerpiece and beacon of hope, optimism, and represent literally multi-millions of dollars in sales, promotion, and marketing for our musicians and as such, take on far more significance than simply three and one-half hours of television programming... Let me reiterate our desire to bring this matter to a positive resolution working with the WGA.

We've been struggling for years to work out what unit you measured hope and optimism in; who knew it was "millions of dollars of sales".

We're sure that 'please let us advertise our product on the television' is exactly the way to hit the striking writers' hearts.

Grammy set themselves up for a fall

So, leading the field for the Grammy Awards - the all-important 50th bunch - are Kanye West and Amy Winehouse. One may or may not turn up; the other will raise merry hell if he doesn't get a prize. Actually, Amy might turn up, win and raise merry hell as well.

Amongst the surprises, Corinne Bailey Rae - who you might have assumed has spent 2007 counting the money from Go Put Your Record On - pops up with a best song nomination; R Kelly gets a promise for one slew of Trapped In The Closet or another; the Flaming Lips are shortlisted for, erm, "best surround sound album" and, proving that the US music industry will fawn over an idea even if it only seems a little new, the White Stripes' USB album is in with a chance of "best boxed or limited edition special packaging". It's a thumb drive, people. Down in spoken word, it's the first Clinton v Obama battle of 2008, although it's Bill rather than Hilary who's up - they're both taking on Jimmy Carter and Alan Alda, though.

The most surprising bit? It might only be in "alternative album", but the Academy, in their wisdom, have shortlisted Lily Allen for a Grammy.

As usual, here's the list of nominations in full; leap over if you're not interested:
