Mumford And Sons hate "Mumford And Sons"

There are many things that annoy people about Mumford And Sons. The name which makes them sound like a faux-artisan cheesemakers that's really owned by Tesco is one of them.

The band hate that, too:

[Marcus Mumford] said: ''I definitely regret the band name. If I'd known it was going to go this way I would have wanted to call it anything other than my last name.

''It's a ball-ache. We thought about changing it but it's a bit late now.''
It's not, you know.

It's possible that changing your name would cause your band to sink without trace, but let's not just focus on the upside.

Gordon in the morning: Mumford 'umble

You know that point in Michael Caine's career where he suddenly started wittering on about how it's great in America because nobody cares about class? That's the point Mumford And Sons have reached:

anjo player WINSTON MARSHALL said: “Class is a big issue here. And some people get picked on more than others. I think we probably do.

“I mean, it doesn’t help that we wear waistcoats and tweed the whole time.

“But there is a reverse snobbishness in England towards that sort of stuff.

“And I think that’s one of the reasons we really enjoy America, ’cos we’re classless.”
Yeah, Winston. People think you're posh boys because of the tweed. Nothing to do with you and Mumford having met at an Eton Group private school, of course.

Worth remembering here that a couple of years back, there was an attempt to drag The Vaccines into the posh band part of the venn diagram, but, despite the parents with expensive London property and the best efforts of Simon Price, the label never stuck.

Compare that with the Mumfords. They can send their footmen to the front gates all they like, displaying "We are classless" messages on gilded easels until it's time for a kitchen supper, but the sense that they'd be played in a sketch by John Cleese rather than Ronnie Corbett always hangs over them.

I don't think it's that America doesn't notice this; indeed, it's a big part of their appeal over in the US - a country which happily shoved all the guns from the Royal baby salute onto the news.

If Winston turned up with his banjo but without the accent in New York, he'd not be given Grammys and would probably be thrown onto a bus heading off to the Appalachians.

It's okay for the Mumfords to complain about how they get "picked on". They seem less interested in admitting the massive advantages their background gave them.

Glastonbury 2013: Late breaking news

I have no idea how accurate the description in the tweet is, but... it's believable, isn't it?

Gordon in the morning: Misunderstanding Mumford

Mumford and Sons pretty much have themselves pegged:

The group’s banjo player, WINSTON MARSHALL, reckons they’re one of the wettest bands in the business.

He said: “We’re not, like, hard men. We’re emotional. We’re not rock’n’roll.

“If AC/DC apologised, that’d be the end of their career.

“But someone doesn’t say hello to us and we’re like, ‘I cannot believe the gall!’”
I'm not quite sure that Marshall would recognise what he was describing as "wet"; I think he was going for "sensitive" or "polite".

But then Gordon seems to struggle to understand anything the band says. Take this:
[Marcus][ revealed: “Every day I use my phone and I have no idea how it works.

“Whereas I see an acoustic guitar played with gusto and I understand just how it works.”
I think that's pretty clear - the difference between advanced technology and more basic kit; the difference between knowing, say, how a guitar makes a C and how your phone knows that there's a burger bar round the corner and can give you turn-by-turn directions to get there.

The gap between having an understanding of your tools, and your tools being a mystery.

Gordon, though, doesn't appear to get it:
The group’s frontman MARCUS MUMFORD admits they haven’t even worked out how to use mobile phones.
No, he really isn't admitting that. He's not saying that at all.

Still, there's an upside:
Just as well – iPhones would be useless keeping 60,000 fans entertained at the O2.
Actually, Gordon's wrong here, too:

Grammys 2013: The winners in full

So, the defining battle of our time has been fought, and won, and now it's official:

is better than

Or, at least, Somebody That I Used To Know has bested We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together for Record Of The Year at the Grammys.

For reasons that have never been convincingly explained, of course, the 'record of the year' isn't the same thing as 'song of the year' - and here, We Are Young (or 'We Are Writing The Song So We Can Live Off The Royalties For The Next Ten Years Whenever A Lazy Montage Sequence On The TV Features People Who Are Young', to give it its full name) bested Call Me Maybe.

Yes, you read that right. The Grammys jury went with the wispy beard over the obviously great song.

The best album went to Mumford And Sons for Babel. With every high-profile award, the whole point of the band seems harder and harder to discern. They're a bit like Ben And Jerrys now - you might like to read the homespun, earth-friendly packaging, but you can't ignore that it's being dumped into cartons by Unilever.

Adele managed to get an award in a quiet year - not for Skyfall, even the Grammys wouldn't push it that far - but for a live track from Live At The Albert Hall. That sounds a bit like chearing.

Forbs tracked the people who needed a box of some sort to carry their multiple prizes:

In 2013, Dan Auerbach and the Black Keys were the biggest winners, taking home four trophies. Skrillex claimed three, as did Gotye, Jay-Z and Kayne West.
Black Keys did at least bring Dr John on for their 'surprise! we're doing a collaboration' bit, which was a way of sneaking a true legend onto prime time CBS.

At the more hackneyed end of s!wdac was Ed Sheeran coming on with Elton John, which I think makes Sheeran the new Pete Doherty.

The Wall Street Journal's description of the closing number sounds like the sort of thing that would have been tolerable if you were a bit drunk:
The show closed with another performance that brought together unlikely, if aging, pioneers of different genres. A pair of rap icons who rose to prominence in the 1980s—Chuck D, of the group Public Enemy, and LL Cool J, also the show's host—was backed by a band that included hard rock musicians from the 1990s: Guitarist Tom Morello, of Rage Against the Machine, and drummer Travis Barker of Blink-182.

As is now traditional, Chris Brown marked the event by being an enormous asshole. Dawn reports:
R&B singer Chris Brown showed up smiling at the Grammy Awards show on Sunday, saying he was just a little banged up after crashing his car into a wall on the eve of the annual music industry awards.

“Little bit of bumps, I’m good though,” Brown, 23, dressed in a white Lanvin suit, told E! News on the red carpet.

Brown crashed his Porsche into a wall in Beverly Hills on Saturday and told police he was trying to elude aggressive paparazzi.

“I’ll get another one,” Brown, laughing, told E! News on Sunday. “Insurance is good.”
Of course he's not worried about smashing his car to pieces on the way to the awards. He did the same thing to Rihanna en route a couple of years back, and that didn't cause him any problems.

Best line in all the coverage goes to the New York Times, and Ben Ratliff:
Taylor Swift opened the CBS telecast performing “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” — with freaky clowns, stilt-walking experts, parasols, a large white rabbit, like a well-coordinated Burning Man happening or a late-period White Stripes photo shoot.

Without any further ado, here's the names and details of the winners:

Gordon in the morning: Mumbling about Mumford

Mumford And Sons are a pretty easy target. That doesn't stop Liam Gallagher, does it?

“Everyone looks like they’ve got f***ing nits and eat lentil soup with their sleeves rolled up.
Lentils? Didn't Liam get the 2008 memo which upgraded the standard hippy/food jibe from "lentils" to "organic tofu"?
“They all look like they live on the heath. Maybe that’s where they record.”
They wear waistcoats and ties - whatever you might think about the Mumfords, they don't look like they're sleeping rough on the heath.
Everyone’s f***ing DON McLEAN — far too many acoustic guitars, no style.
Too many acoustic guitars, eh? Let's come back to that one in a moment.
They look like they shop at Oxfam.
No they don't, do they? The whole point of the Mumfords is they look like they've had their clothes laid out for them by their butlers, surely?
“I wouldn’t put any posters up of any band if I was a 16-year-old lad. There’s none of that sitting down on f***ing stools for me, sweetheart.”
Will you not, eh?

What's this story from The Sun last year?
[T]he Beady Eye singer and his fans have got something else to look forward to – Liam will be making his first acoustic performance in January as part of London Fashion Week. Only 120 punters will hear eight live tracks.
Maybe there are too many acoustic guitars after all.

Having seen his beloved Liam slapping about at the Mumfords, Gordon stands behind trying to join in:
He didn’t even mention that they all went to posh schools.
No, Gordon, he didn't. Because he was trying to pretend they were some sort of tramps with guitars, and "who went to Posh School" would have been inconsistent with that.

The brightest minds of our generation

Benga has looked around his generation, and found it is good:

Asked who the artists of this generation are, he told NME: "Us obviously, Skrillex and Mumford & Sons."
Really? God, I fear for the Young People.

Grammys 2012: The shortlist

It's going to be hard throwing a swanky awards bash in this economic climate. The temptation to be showy and flash must be avoided at all costs, while still keeping a sense of dignity. How are the Grammy organisers going with that?

ade
Phew. And remember, this is after they've cut things down.

The "historical album" category seems a bit strange - most of the nominations suggest it's supposed to be about collecting and celebrating forgotten parts of the musical past, which is a great thing to do, but then slam bang in the middle there's a re-release of a Wings album.

The best Wings album, admittedly, but still, it's a re-release. And has the air of 'how can we try and persuade Paul McCartney to show up this year?' to it.

I was going to say that Bon Iver looked like this year's Mumford and Sons, but somehow Mumfords have turned up again. I know there's an element of "I saw them at the Falcon" about this, but since they won last year there's become something less loveable about them. It's like someone discovering you like olives, and then forcing olives on you at every opportunity; what was once a delicious flavour to have mixed in with the others has become too dominant in the dish.

Adele's accession suffers from a different, but related problem. Her album was about as good as you'd get in a multi-million selling record, but has already become so overfamiliar it's surprising to see it's only just now coming up for consideration by the Grammy Committee. It's already become so much part of the furniture, it's as much a historical relic as Band On The Run.

It's all irrelevant of course; any shortlist for anything other than 'what shall we throw off the plane to make it lighter' that contains Bruno Mars clearly isn't meant to be taken seriously.
