VH1 suffers advertiser walk-outs after sneaking Sorority Sisters onto air

VH1's series, Sorority Sisters - a reality series about black sororities in the US - was snuck onto the air with little fanfare, suggesting that even the network knew in its heart that it had got it terribly wrong, but couldn't quite bring itself to cancel the whole project.

Maybe it should have done, because the reward for its horrible portrayal of black Americans is costing it heavily: advertisers are abandoning the show like it's rancid eggnog:

A spokeswoman for Hallmark confirmed that the decision was made in response to public opposition to the show. The company, Linda Odell said in an e-mail, will not advertise during the show “because of consumer reaction to the program.”

Update: 3:50 p.m.: Several other advertisers including Honda, Crayola, and JBL, a subsidiary of Harman International, have also said they are pulling their ads from the show. State Farm has responded to inquiries saying that they do not air commercials during Sorority Sisters.
And it's not just the show, either. Carmex is walking from the whole channel as a result:

98 Degrees to a name on the ballot?

Justin Jeffre is running for mayor of Cincinnati. Or at least thinking of it:

A former pop star says he wants to run for Cincinnati mayor [...]

Justin Jeffre of 98 degrees is a queen city native.
And what, you may wonder, is the main political question that is driving this interest in representing the people of the Queen City?
He's pitching the idea for VH1 to do a reality show on his mayoral campaign. The cable network is considering it.
Excuse me, I'll just be over here, trying to sob myself to death.

In 2011, Jeffre was arrested for his part in Occupy Cincinnati, so he does at least have some sort of record to campaign on. Other than his records.

What are you even doing,VH1?

No, seriously, VH1... what the hell is this?

Underneath this, someone called Christopher Rosa burbles over a bunch of photos from the previous decade where you could, like, see the side of women's breasts and everything:
A key ingredient to wild pop star style of the 2000s was plunging—and we mean plunging—necklines
It gets worse as it goes along.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that: We’re firmly behind the Free the Nipple campaign that asserts women’s rights to go topless.
This might sound familiar to you. You're probably thinking of the bit in Knowing Me, Knowing You were Alan Partridge can barely contain himself talking about feminists wanting to burn bras.
These pop stars were basically before their time; with each dangerously plunging neckline, Beyonce, Jessica Simpson, Xtina and the gang were telling us that women should get to show off their top-halves too. It really was the golden era.
Dude, you could see tits. And you didn't even have to hide in the bushes outside the nurse's home.
If you’re in the mood to walk on the wild side, check out these 10 almost nip-slip ensembles. We recommend jamming out to Britney Spears Pandora while browsing…you know, to get the full “dirty pop” effect.
And by "jamming out to Britney Spears" we're certain Christopher Rosa means "using a sports sock".

VH1 has questions for Robin Thicke

Given that Robin Thicke is, at best, a howling misogynistic void, was VH1 being brave or satirical when it decided to invite Twitter to ask questions of him?

They must have known.

They must have known.

There's no way they couldn't have known what the outcome would have been.

We've seen so many of these hashtag campaigns now, how would you not know?

Which can only mean one thing.

This is pretty much the result VH1 was expecting.

Which means there's only one logical explanation.

Someone at VH1 came up with a plan to focus all the world's disgust with Robin Thicke into one place. And then make him look at it.

Who knew that VH1 still had a vital role to play in 2014?

Don't worry music, Britney's coming

Apparently music is in need of saving, in some way, and VH1 has appointed itself saviour.

Of course, it can't save music on its own - it has other demands on its time, making programmes about tattoos - and so has some ambassadors on board:

Britney Spears has joined the VH1 Save the Music Foundation's 2014 Ambassador Class, a consortium of musical superstars that includes Taye Diggs, Jason Derulo, Hunter Hayes, Gloria Reuben, Diane Birch and Cher Lloyd. The artists have banded together to promote music education in American schools.
It's a laudable aim, but Cher Lloyd and Britney Spears don't quite strike me as the right people to address the main problem with teaching music in American schools, which is Americans don't want to pay the taxes that would fund it.

Perhaps VH1's parent company, Viacom, might want to stop taking fifty million dollars in tax breaks when it makes pisspoor investment decisions and have the states have more money available for schools, rather than sending in Britney Spears to hector people into learning London's Burning on the recorder?

VH1 discovers black people

For a long time, the best hope African-Americans had of getting airtime on VH1 was that they might play the video for Say Say Say. Now, though, Popmatters claims it's the audience which might save the network, although only because VH1 has realised it can insult the intelligence of audiences of any race, creed or colour:

The Viacom-owned cable channel has found ratings gold with shows such as “Basketball Wives,” “Love & Hip Hop,” and the tamer “La La’s Full Court” and “T.I. & Tiny” and hopes to keep building on the foundation that started with “Flavor of Love.” That 2006 dating show featured female contestants fighting, spitting and defecating on the floor as they vied for the affections of gold-toothed hip-hop lothario Flavor Flav. And VH1 has more reality fare on the way: Its newest contender, “Hollywood Exes,” featuring the ex-wives of Eddie Murphy, Prince, R. Kelly, Will Smith and Jose Canseco, premieres this summer.

“They tapped into an audience that is very faithful,” said Robin Boylorn, a professor at the University of Alabama who focuses on race studies. “It’s smart in terms of marketing and money because in this moment they have the ear of a particular public. I think that they took advantage of that—we see it with all the spinoff shows for ‘Basketball Wives’ and ‘Love & Hip Hop.’”
But don't worry, white America - VH1 isn't abandoning you, either:
“The numbers were great,” said Jeff Olde, who oversees all VH1 original programming and production. “It showed to us that an inclusive network can survive.” Olde noted that music remains a part of the channel along with non-African-American-themed reality hits such as “Mob Wives.” Later this year VH1 will roll out a slate of pop-culture-centric and nostalgia-based new shows, including a gabfest helmed by Jenny McCarthy and “Miss You Much,” a revamping of “Where Are They Now.”
Actually, thirty year old Macca and Jackson duets are starting to sound more and more like quality programming.

Grungeobit: Mike Starr

Mike Starr, former bassist for Alice In Chains, has been found dead in Salt Lake City.

Born in Honolulu in 1966, a teenage Starr joined Seattle band Diamond Lie. Building a following in the North West, Diamond Lie became Alice In Chains and landed a deal with Colombia.

Originally Colombia thought they had a metal band on their books, but as Nirvana started to grow and grow, the executives gathered to have one of those "you know, if you squint a bit, this band are a bit grunge, aren't they?" meetings, and Alice In Chains suddenly found themselves with a massive marketing effort running in their favour.

Starr left the band just after the recording of Dirt - the album which would be their biggest. At the time, the standard lines about mutual agreement were trotted out; years later Starr would reveal that what everyone thought - he was sacked as a result of prodigious drug use - was, indeed, the case.

At the time, one of the myriad rock supergroups was coming together around the vision of former Anthrax singer's Al B. Romano. Black Sabbath ex Ray Gillen was also in, as was Bobby Rondinelli, who had already got stamps in his passport from Rainbow, Sabbath and the Blue Oyster Cult. Although active for only a year before the death of Ray Gillen, somehow the band managed to create enough material for four albums of varying essentialness.

The next appearance of Mike Starr was as a participant in poke-the-sick VH1 gameshow Celebrity Rehab. He was part of the third series of the programme last year. To the surprise of nobody, trying to fight a serious addiction in the context of light entertainment didn't work.

His body was found in a house in Salt Lake City yesterday. Mike Starr was 44; police say there is no evidence of foul play in his death.

VH1 bring back Behind The Music

By the time VH1 axed its Behind The Music series, it was looking pretty tired - reduced to doing a special on Pantera. But, hey, it's been five years or so - surely some exciting new bands have come and given the revived series lots of juicy stories for their wish list? Right?

Lil Wayne and Scott Weiland have signed on to participate, and the network is near agreements with several other performers.

So, no, then. Lil Wayne? Really?

Striking long, long after the iron has cooled

Chanelle Hayes. Reach back into your mind, and you might remember her from last year's Big Brother. Now, she's capitalising on that fame (alright, capitalising on that slight flicker of recognition) by launching a career as a pop singer. Or, rather, launching a reality show about her launching a career as a pop singer. She wants us to know that, despite having made money as a Victoria Beckham lookalike, and following Victoria Beckham about, and copying Victoria Beckham's hairstyle, that there's more to her than a Posh wannabe:

"I know that people think I'm talentless, but I've played the violin since I was seven and then I did music at A Level. I want to have a go at it and show people that I'm not just a miserable cow walking around with a pout on my face."

Dismissing claims that she is attempting to copy her idol's music style, she said: "Yeah, we wear similar clothes because I choose to but she sings one way and I sing another. I don't sound like her when I speak and I'm not trying to sound like her when I sing."

Aha. It's similar clothes, as in "I came out and would you believe it, to my surprise Victoria Beckham was wearing the very same dress yesterday".

Still, at least she's not copying Beckham's music - she's not that stupid.
"People love to hate, and if people don't like it - fair enough. I've got a CD with my name on it that I can give to my mum and she'll be dead proud."

Yes. You have a CD with your name on. Money can't buy that. Well, actually, it can, but you know what we mean.

There's more, much more to Chanelle:
"I just want to show that I can pose on the cover of a magazine or newspaper but I can also do academic things as well."

Mmm. Good luck with winning the Regis Chair Of Being On A VH1 Programme At Oxford, Chanelle.

Spice Girls' people block tribute show

VH1 had a nifty idea to celebrate - if celebrate is the word - the return of the Spice Girls: a talent show to put together a five-piece tribute act. Trouble is, the Spice Girl bunker got wind of it, sent a few threatening letters and now it isn't going to happen.

Presumably taking a bunch of showbiz wannabes, finding five who fitted a pre-cut "personality-style" template and could sing a bit, and putting them on stage wasn't just trading on the Spice Girls' brand; it was exactly how the Spice Girls were made in the first place. We imagine Fuller was worried VH1 would have ended up with a tribute which outclassed the original.

I've waited all my life to date... [name to be inserted later]

You've got to love VH1. They're shooting one of those shows that makes Celebrity Love Island look like the Open University, and have put out a casting call:

So here is the information I have so far for the show: I am casting for VH1/51 Minds Entertainment, the producers of 'The Surreal Life', 'Flavor of Love', 'I Love New York' and 'Rock of Love'.

"I will be in New York and surrounding areas, (Long Island, New Jersey) from September 4 - 12, 2007, looking for SINGLE WOMEN, 21+, with big personalities for this VH1 ROCK N' ROLL RELATIONSHIP SHOW, where 20 girls will compete for the chance to date the rock star of their dreams.

Blimey... the rock star of their dreams, eh? Who would that be, then?
(the rock star has not been announced yet, but I would think someone that makes the girls wild and girls would do anything just to meet this guy, a Tommy Lee type of rocker).

Ah. So, they're looking for people whose dreams revolve around meeting any rockstar who happens to be available, and unencumbered by any sense of dignity. We'd recommend having an "I [heart]" tattoo, with space to scrawl in later the name of whoever the researchers can persuade up.

Re-Genesis

VH1 have created their own answer to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, presumably thinking that anything that doesn't involve a trip to Ohio has to be a bonus. And it's a way of tempting back groups who would consider themselves above that series where they try to reunite groups for a bit of a laugh.

So it is that the first ever VH1 Rock Horrors was born. Sorry, that's Rock Honours. Agreeing to come ("Chosen for the honours") were ZZ Top, Ozzy Osbourne and Genesis, who did agree to play together for the first time in fifteen years, but sadly drew the line at calling themselves Genezzis to make it a hattrick of double-z bands.

Nickelback showed their respect for ZZ Top by doing a cover of Sharp Dressed Man - presumably they thought it would be too risky for sometimes-soused driver Chad Kroeger to drive onto the stage in the ZZ Top car, although it's arguable he'd have done less damage than he did on the Top back catalogue.

Keane also turned up to do something; and the whole thing was held together by Robin Williams as host - presumably chosen as he was last culturally relevant at roughly the same time any of the winners were.

Ozzy Osbourne advertises an oily butter replacement.

Another video marathon

It's been a while since No Rock last sat and watched the video channels - some new ones have come on stream, so fuelled by Kahula-flavoured coffee, we swallow hard and grab the remote:
MTV - Nick Carter - Help Me
The vj (they don’t call them that anymore, do they?) makes a lame joke about “being stuck at the back of a queue in McDonalds”) - Nick shouldn’t worry - a few more lame ass tracks like this, and he’ll be right in front of the queue. Right in front of the customers.

Flip
MTV Hits - Zoe Birkett - treat me like a lady
“Tonight, Matthew (um, Davina) I’m going to be Janet Jackson.” Zoe clearly thinks she’s having fun so we should all, too. The trouble is, she’s neither nasty nor fastidious enough to be Ms Jackson, so you just get her bouncing about in a cheap gold top to a not-very-good anthem wannabe. The real end result of the Popstars/Academy stranglehold on pop is that we now get a procession of acts who still behave like they’re auditioning on a rainy Sunday afternoon along with six thousand other people. There’s no star quality, as all they have to be good at is talent shows.

sadly, the advert for T-mobile has more imagination lavished on it than Zoe’s “career” - machines not working getting smashed up. Violorific. MTV channels seem to be showing a lot more commercials these days - probably because they don’t get as much from Sky per viewer as they used to. And then when the long ad break ends, there’s ads-dressed-as-programmes in the form of plugs for MTv related tours.

Eventually, we get
Avril Lavigne - Sk8r Boi
“He was a boy, she was a girl - can i make it any clearer than that?” Only in a world where Limp Bizkit pass for metal could this Tiffany retread ever be mistaken for punk, or punkish, or punkette. The end - a hired helicopter pretends to be the police coming to break up the impromptu street ‘gig’ - deserves to be stored in some sort of hall of infamy...

Flip
VH1 - elton john - sorry seems to be the hardest word
It’s the 100 greatest men day today. mercifully, this at least isn’t the version with Blue on; just elton in some scary shoulder pads, looking rather sad. Then, at six...

u2 - beautiful day
It is a mark of how low ambition is at VH1 that they can’t think of a better way to fill time than day after day of spurious Top 100s; that they can’t think of a better U2 track than beautiful day; that they can’t think of five men better than Bono. Jesus, there’s three in the phrase “The rest of U2”, for Christ’s sake.

Flip
VH1 Classic - elvis costello - she
How does elvis choose which cover versions to record? Do you suppose he just gets out the Guiness Book of British Hit Singles and a pin? The trouble is, see, Elvis has a careworn voice, and matching it up with a downbeat tune sucks the life and joy out of a room so much that calling on Satan won’t help - he won’t come to you, the room is that bleak. Next time, someone get him to do Put On A Happy Face.

Flip
MTV2
Actually, what I was saying about MTV channels getting very advert heavy? Not in MTV2’s case. Indeed, you’d have to have your wits about you to realise that the channel went commercial about a year ago. Like a whorehouse called the Camilla Parker Brothel, no matter how attractive they try and make themselves, nobody seems to want to take the opportunity afforded by MTV2 to get their message across to the largest group of disaffected male youths 18 - 34 offered outside of Kerranng. You’d have thought that a soap company might want to run three minutes of “If you want a real girlfriend, try fucking washing” advert. Good Charlotte turn up. What is this - Avril Lavigne’s younger brothers?

Flip
MTV Base - eminem - lose yourself
This you know, of course. I’m going to have to flip because the “music, the movement” bit is one of those hooks that sinks into my head like fishbait and will never leave

Flip
MTV Dance
No, sorry, I’m not waiting half my life for the ads to finish. Especially when they’re doing competitions like “what is the day after today called?”

Flip
TMF
This is the ‘new’ MTV channel created for Freeview - basically trying to cram all the MTV channels into one slot, they’ve come up with the plan of trying to pretend there’s a natural progression of music through the day - so kids watch at breakfast, and they’ll show S Club Juniors; then it’s older audiences during the day, then more kids, and so on until midnight when it’s just smelly perverts and they’ll show S Club Juniors. The trouble is, of course, that people watching Music Video Channels during the day tend not have the sort of life that requires any progression - nobody who gawps at MTV Dance at two in the afternoon is expecting kids back home in an hour, or a partner back in three, or anyone to call, ever, until the guy they stole their last ounce off finds out where they live.
And TMF - The Music Factory - is the sort of shit name that bright eyed Squarial-pushers BSB used to give to channels. And look what happened to them.

Madonna - Don’ Tell Me
Maddy, we wouldn’t bother. If you think this sort of drum-hum will do, you’re clearly not listening to anybody anyway.

Flip
The Box - J Lo and LL Cool J - all i have
No, J, no no no - don’t do that thing where you half close your eyes and pout at the camera - it’s not sultry, it makes you look like you’re having a little hissy fit. It’s curious pairing LL Cool J with J-Lo - presumably LL’s interest in butts has given them common ground. Unfortunately, this is one of those times when Jennifer wants to sing rather than do the trilly little thing that makes Aint It Funny so perfect pop perky. There is a bit where she looks at her mobile phone which is displaying “LL Calling” - which seems to be an odd way to program your (video) boyfriend’s details in, don’t you think? I’m trying to imagine them having sex together; him grunting “Oh, LL is there” and her rasping “You’re pleasing the management...”

Flip
Kiss - Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River
Justin’s wearing an anorak for much of this video - clearly, having tried desperately to interest the gay audience, he’s now making a bid for the trainspotters, the ramblers, and the bus number collectors. The non-threatening but ultimately meaningless track - not, sadly, that Cry me A River - suggests this as well.

Flip
Smash Hits TV - Darius - Colourblind
Flip
Magic
Magic are doing At The Movies - again. The reliance of the EMAP stations on theme weeks (Kiss are doing Eminem week; SH it’s Pink week) is something curious - does anyone really rush home with a spring in their step thinking “Magic are showing some pop videos of songs featured on the soundtrack of movies” - which, thanks to the delights of cross-media ownership, could be virtually any bloody song anyway. In this case, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes Up Where We Belong. Which is, of course,a sign to...

Flip
Q - Sugababes - Stronger
This was, of course, a double a-side with the Powerpuff Girls track, wasn’t it? Back in the day when double a sides did, indeed, have two sides, the existence of two lead songs suggested the band, faced with a choice between two excellent pieces of music, really didn’t want to condemn something that they felt to be genius to B-side status. Nowadays, two lead tracks just means they hope that the inclusion of two titles may make up for the fact that neither are strong enough to be worth the effort on their own.
Even if you didn’t know, you’d be able to spot the Atomic Kittenette in this video, wouldn’t you?

Flip
Kerrang -
They’re running down their Top 10 Most selected. Liam Lynch is described as “fantastically sarcastic”, which seems to be letting him off way too lightly
Bowling For Soup - Bitch Song
One day, one of these nu-rock acts will discover a sense of humour and record an album called “Here Are The Old Men”

Flip
Chart Show TV - The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up
They say its the album chart, but god alone knows what album might be in the chart with this on it. And the fact its the uncut version of the video - fucking, tits and arses at teatime - suggests that maybe someone at TCSTV has made a bit of mistake. It’s a woman all along - betcha didn’t see that coming.
The Proge video has butts and breasts, and it’s followed by Craig David, thereby raising the very real possibility of a punchline involving “cunt” of some sort.

Flip
The Hits - Jurgen Vries - Brave New World
It’s Charlotte Church all along - betcha didn’t see that coming. Thing is, everyone seems to be so amazed that Charlotte Church has made a not-opera record that nobody has actually noticed that its not very good. The singing doesn’t exactly stretch her talent any; and even if it did, the mix is so horrible you wouldn’t be able to tell.
The Hits is EMAP’s answer to TMF, of course, but at least lets the viewers choose the tracks to save the need for tortuous programming nonesense.

Flip
P-Rock - 4 Foot Fingers - something or other
Another new-ish channel; this is a bit punkier than the other rock channels, which means that it tends to wind up playing an awful lot of very low budget videos indeed; like an open access channel with singing, or Iraqi Tv when it’s broadcasting tributes to Saddam. The other problem is that most of its playlist comprises of not very good punk bands. Seriously, we’ve never made it through long enough to find out if they show commercials or not.

Flip
Classic FM TV - Vannessa Mae
Of course its Vanessa Bloody Mae. The Tatu its okay to like, of course. Then she takes her final bow, and Bobby McFerrin comes on. Hes got a lot less irritating since Dont Worry Be Happy. Not enough to be forgiven, but at least he’s heading in the right direction.

A canter through the video channels

MTV are doing some advertising...

flip...

MTV Hits - Sugababes - Angels with dirty faces
Of course, we'd all been led to believe that there was a done deal for Bis to provide the theme for the Powerpuff Girls movie - certainly, Bis had - which makes this all the more disappointing. The Sugababes have pulled off that rare thing; the title track of their album is also one of the filler tracks; and this is also their second film tie-in in a row (after The Guru's Round Round, of course). And since their other comeback track was an electroclash cut-up cover affair, you have to wonder if they're ever actually going to do a proper track ever again.
For the video, the band have been rendered in Powerpuff girl cartoon style, which must have proved a challenge, finding an extra dimension for the drawing of Heidi. Dammit, we could have been watching Sci-Fi Stephen and Manda Rin kicking butt here. Cheated.

sarah whatmore - when I lost you
you lost us at the exact moment you wandered on pretending to be Holly Vallance

flip...

VH1
bemusingly, they're plugging the MTV music awards. Now, we know they're all part of the same family, but since VH1 push themselves as not being for kids, why would their target audience have any interest in an awards show that will presumably consist of Eminem emoting and Kelly Osbourne clinging, clinging, desperately as it all starts to ebb away?

kelly and nelly - dilemma
we love this video, partly because the way it starts out as a 50's sit com spoof and then suddenly forgets its concept; partly because you can just - if you stare - spot the pain Kelly is trying to hide as she's forced to claim she's crazy about Nelly. But we're no clearer about the line "even when I'm with my boo/you know I'm crazy over you." Theories suggest that she can't pronounce "beau" properly, that she's dating Martin Carr from the Boo Radleys, that she's used her slice of Destiny's Child millions to buy the remains of boo.com, or that some researcher has discovered that "boo" is the street word for "dim bloke I'm currently fucking." Meanwhile, Nelly spends the entire video with a piece of sticking plaster stuck to his face, either in homage to Grace Jones who used to do that sort of thing all the time, or else to hint that he has cut himself shaving and just doesn't care. 'Cause having a girl's name doesn't mean he's a girl.

rolling stones - only rock and roll
for some reason, the stones are all dressed as sailors. sadly, this is from an era when they were too old for such outfits - even Mick doesn't look able for Seaman Staines. The whole thing smacks more than a little of that Morecambe and Wise sketch where the entire BBC News team did South Pacific, and you had to watch Eddie Waring jiggling about in a too-small white outfit. The Rolling Stones are rich - you really think they'd be better off spending their money buying up the copyright to stuff like this to make sure it never gets an outing...

flip...

VH1 Classic Smooth
Alison Moyet - That ole devil called love
The exact midway point on her transformation from new romantic called Alf to jazz chanteusse called Ms Moyet. The effect of smokey bar-rooms around heartbreak closing time is lost, somewhat, as the director has clearly thought that Alison laying about barely moving was too sedantry for television, and has doodled cartoon devils and angels over the top

luther vandross and mariah carey - endless love
from the time before she went "nowhere near as barmy as the press made out", of course; a copy of the original so pointless and adding so little you could run it side-by-side the Peabo and Roberta original as a Spot The Difference competition. Mariah does an iritating thing with her hands showing where she's going to be heading for a higher note, presumably believing that Luther, despite standing next to her, might not be able to detect the foghorn bellow as she chases up the scale.

Jamirioquai comes on

flip...

MTV2 - Coldplay - the scientist
This is pretty much an example of why we hate Coldplay so much, as this isn't actually all bad - in fact, it's probably the closest thing they've ever come to writing a song in their own voice. But then, just as you start to wonder about rehabilitation, Chris Martin starts "wooo-hoooing" all over the end. Interestingly, Martin and Mariah suffer from exactly the same weakness - aware of the limits of their own abilities, they're afraid to allow their performances to be low-key; they're scared to produce a work which doesn't have great, greasy mayonnaisey dollops of extra emoting ladelled over the top. In effect, they undermine themselves by providing the vocal equivalent of a laugh track. The video is quite interesting though, if you've not seen Memento; it's a car crash run backwards, which justifies having beautiful dead corpse on screen for much of it. However, the story doesn't go back quite far enough to explain what a minger like Martin was doing with a pretty girl by his side in the first place.

the manics - there but for the grace of god
... which is, you'd imagine, what richey says when he looks down from pop vallhalla and sees his former muckers churning out will-this-do dirges like this

linkin park - crawlin'
see - the pretty goth girl is crying tears of blood...

flip...

MTV Base are doing a Jay-Z videography, and they're showing don't knock the hustle. For some reason, Jay-Z is dressed like a minor member of the aristocracy from 1931, only with cool shades

flip...

MTV Dance
Promoting their new 24 hour status, they've got a trailer in which a bloke is about to clearly get down with his gal. They're getting hot and heavy, so he nips out to get her some water. He returns from the kitchen only to discover that she's sat in front of the telly watching MTV Dance now. This, presumably, is a reckless move by the channel designed to get people to cancel their sky digital subscriptions before their sex life is wrecked by MTV

flip...

The Box
Christina Aguilera - Dirrty
So, that's Christina's new direction, is it? Living permanently in Britney Spear's Boys video? Thing is, that no matter how trashy she dresses, how much she waggles her tits, Christina just doesn't have the dirt in her eyes to carry off slut convincingly - while Brit just carries it off, and Pink fits the bill, with Christina, she looks like a member of the Mickey Mouse gang who's been kidnapped. Or, as a passing acquaintance puts it: Brit spits, Pink swallows, Christina douses her mouth with Evian and scrubs her teeth over and over again. Selling your sexuality is one thing; flogging someone else's is quite another.

flip...

Kiss
Sophie Ellis Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor
See, this illustrates our point perfectly. Who doesn't love Sophie now she's acknowledged that she's neither sultry bombette nor pouty indie ice-queen? E-B has come to terms with her self - and she's a happy, swirly elfin pixie. And she's never looked as delicious.

flip...

Smash Hits TV
S Club - Don't Stop Moving
It's S Club week all week on SHits TV, although the departure of one of them presumably scuppered their ability to call it S Club 7 Days. In fact, in a deft rewriting of history, the band are billed as S Club even on tracks where they were S Club 7. This is what's wrong with the whole Smash Hits franchise these days - they seem incapable of dealing with pop music as a living thing with a history, and as such they have to try and recreate their patch of the culture as a music which lives entirely in an ever-present now. The end result is that they wind up having to accept every new chancer with wide-eyed enthusiasm and totally at face value. We can't decide if its pop music that's turned Smash Hits this way, or if Smash Hits has colluded in turning pop music. Whatever, it treats its audience with a little less respect each time.

Christina - Dirrty
Maybe someone from Songs of Praise should offer her a job. I'd bet she'd snap it up...

Magic
Cranberries - Linger
Of course, this was the slightly more pop-version they did to try and blot out the memory of when they did a Sophie Ellis style sidestep from Indie Tykes to Proper Artists, filling in time before the anti-terror song that all 70s, 80s and 90s Irish artists (and, erm, Spandau Ballet) were apparently obliged to do prior to the Good Friday argeement. David Trimble believes that Ash have got a song called 'The Tanks On The Street Again' waiting to roll even as we speak, you know. The Linger video is, like seventy five percent of Magic's output, shot in black and white, and its appearance made us misread the bemusing onscreen plug for something called "SHI Tour" as "Shit Hour", which would have seemed appropriate but disarmingly honest

Q Pink - Get the party started
Bemusingly, the EPG now bills Q as "where the stars are", which seems to suggest a difference opinion between Q magazine and Q TV as to where, exactly, the brand sits these days. If Q magazine appeared on the EPG, it would be more "where the well-rewarded serious artists" are. Anyway, Pink is excellent, as we've mentioned before.

No Doubt - Underneath It All
Not so much cod reggae as hoki reggae. You have to assume they're aware that the track would disappear if a large dog sneezed, as they've got shot of the rest of the band for most of the video, and come up with a conceit which can be summed up in two words - "Gwen strips." The band turn up on bicycles for the shit, shit, shit toasting bit in the middle, but I'd imagine the DVD version will allow you to skip that bit entirely

Then there's a plug for the Best new act vote for the Q Awards, for which The Bees appear amongst the hopefulls, which seems odd to us.

Kerrang - someone with long hair is plodding through saxon. The choices menu at the bottom, however, offers a track by Linkin Park called One Step Closer, which we hope is a cover of Bardo's Eurovision entry. I had a friend who insisted that it was about someone nearly getting raped, so it wouldn't be entirely out of place on the Nearly Satan channel.

Chart Show TV
A trail suggests that the Easy Zone is on from ten til three every day, but confusingly reckons that The Official Country Chart is somehow easy listening - four hungry children and a crop in the fields? Even more oddly, it's eleven in the morning, and the dance chart is on

MTV
U2 - Electrical Storm
Is it just me, or is there something arrogant about this new habit of recording a new song for Greatest Hits albums, and sticking them out as supporting singles as if it will be a hit by right. (See also: manics) Maybe I'm just getting old. The good thing about this track is that Bono actually does a spot of singing on it, rather than the lazy talky-sing thing that he's slumped into doing ever since he started to become more important than being a mere pop singer. Not that the singing bit lifts this into any realm of desirability - we weren't sure at Q's decision to name Bono the most influential person in music, but I guess it does underline that the people who shape the recording industry don't actually do anything creative.

VH1
MARRS - Pump Up The Volume
Its one hit wonders day on VH1, which is the sort of thing that raises all sorts of questions over definitions - after all, is it really fair to hang the title on MARRS who only did one track and never tried again (in that form), when acts like Joe Dolce offered hand jobs and sweeties in a desperate bid to shake off the shame? Of course, along with Worst Video Day, this is all just another elaborate excuse for VH1 to show renee and renato's save your love video again
